Recreational Horizons, a nonprofit 501(c)(3) all-volunteer organization, has for the past 46 years provided social, educational, and recreational travel experiences for intellectually disabled students and adults. Our participants have visited such locations as the San Diego Zoo, Sea World, Knott's Berry Farm, Disneyland and Universal Studios. When we traveled in Arizona, we visited places like the Grand Canyon, Arizona-Sonora Desert Museum, Kartchner Caverns, Out of Africa, and the Renaissance Festival. In past years we have also been to destinations in Nevada, Texas, and Florida. We have even offered train trips and cruise experiences. We have a 3:1 participant/chaperone ratio so that we meet the needs of those involved in our program, and so that we can also individualize their experiences as much as possible.
Since the pandemic ended, our costs have skyrocketed. Everything including buses, hotels, admissions, and food has become much more expensive. We used to be able to take 2 buses of participants on our trips, but now we can afford only 1 bus with 42 participants and 14 chaperones. We've also had to cut our program back to just two 5-day California trips each year. Additionally, we unexpectedly suddenly lost our major source of fundraising that kept the trips affordable for our travelers. For 10 years we had volunteers run a hot dog booth at State Farm Stadium (Arizona Cardinals). That income kept the price we charged for the travel experiences, at a level that families/caregivers could handle. Unfortunately, getting 15 volunteers to every game/event at the stadium for what was usually an 8-10 hour time commitment, became more and more difficult. At this point we no longer have the necessary number of volunteers we need to work our booth, and the process to recruit, train, and get clearance for new volunteers, is extremely intensive and very time-consuming. Also, many volunteers drop out after the first game or two.
Every trip we make requires that Recreational Horizons can subsidize between $5,000 - $7,000 of the cost. As our costs continue to rise, we cannot keep simply charging our participants more money. We would very rapidly get to a point where only those who were wealthy could afford to go. That is not something that we can allow. Our philosophy has always been that we want to be open to all who need and want our program.
Our situation is pretty dire. We are asking for donations so that we will be able to continue our travel experiences for Arizona's intellectually disabled individuals. Any amount will be greatly appreciated. Since we are a 501(c)(3) organization, all contributions are tax-deductible on both Arizona and federal income tax forms. Also, since we are completely an all-volunteer organization, all donations will go to help pay for the trips we provide to the very special people that we serve. It is our goal to make it to our 50th anniversary and beyond! Thank you in advance for any help and support that you can give to us!
