Help Rebuild Edward Chisholm’s Home

Many of you will know my Uncle Edward and our family, the Chisholms of North Grant. I’m Edward’s niece, Kevin Chisholm’s daughter, and I’m writing on behalf of him and our entire family.

On the evening of Sunday, August 3rd, tragedy struck: my uncle’s home was completely destroyed by fire.

It was thanks to an observant and quick thinking neighbour driving by who alerted my family to the smoke. For this we are beyond grateful.

Unfortunately, Uncle Edward hadn’t recently renewed his home insurance. On top of the sentimental loss, and the loss of his home, he lost several chainsaws, spacing saws, and all their woods and safety gear in the fire. These items are essential for their work on the Christmas tree farm, and they can not continue without them.

Uncle Edward and Auntie Sarah built their home nearly 40 years ago on our family’s farm, which has been in the Chisholm family for over 200 years. It was here, in this little slice of paradise, that they raised my 7 cousins: Jason, Ginette, Ian, Nicole, Matthew, Katie and wee Luke.

Sadly, Auntie Sarah passed away from cancer 15 years ago, however Edward continued on the farm with his two sons Jason and Luke, growing Canada’s famed Balsam Fir Christmas trees, work that he loves, and work that's kept him going. My uncle is the hardest working man, having worked 15-20 hour days for years to support his family.

It was also here that I had the best summer of my childhood. My dad, the second oldest of ten siblings raised on the farm (Uncle Edward being the eldest), had moved out west for work, where I grew up. Known as the city cousin, I was thrilled when my aunt brought me out to stay for a whole summer. Their home was warm, loud, and full of love, a proper family home. We kissed toads, jumped on hay bales, played in a forest of magical Christmas trees, watched hummingbirds, and pretended to marry the New Kids on the Block. It was heaven. My heart aches knowing that this home away from home is gone.

My uncle is incredibly stubborn, and I know he would never ask anyone for help. Nor would he let his kids ask. And so, here I am, the most far-flung member of our family, asking for help on his behalf.

If you’re able to give, even the smallest amount, it will go directly to helping my uncle clear the debris and begin rebuilding his life. Every penny will go straight to Edward, via his middle child Nicole Cornect (neé Chisholm). We’ve chosen to have Nicole manage any funds on his behalf whilst he’s in hospital and going through this difficult time.

Please do share with your friends and neighbours. North Grant and Antigonish is full of the most decent and caring people, and I can only thank you from the bottom of my heart.

I love you Uncle,

Love from your Chester.
