Habari wenzangu! As a country known for its peace, Tanzania has been shaken by the current situation: 3 straight days of protests across the country were met with a government instated 5-day internet blackout, 6pm - 6am curfew and brutal shootings. At least 700 people were reported dead by October 31st while public transport systems, fuel stations, government buildings and private businesses were set ablaze. The aftermath is dire. Due to transportation blockades, food insecurity and inflated prices are threatening the livelihoods of many, particularly families of the deceased and those who rely on commuting to work.

$5,500 of the funds raised will be directed towards "Sambaza Upendo Initiative": emergency relief food distribution across Arusha, Dar, and Mbeya for 200 families affected by post-election violence and food insecurity. Powerlight School and Foundation (Arusha based NGO) relies on community leaders to identify households of the deceased and those most in need. We organize food distribution events for these families collect their provisions (rice, beans, cooking oil, etc). With your generosity we have supported 40 households already!

The rest of the funds collected, contingent on how much we can raise, will be dedicated towards supporting Kesho Kutwa Yetu’s goals:

(short term) Rebuilding Tanzania post the 2025 election protests.

(long term) Data-driven, human centered, culturally conscious and sustainable Tanzanian development.

Kesho Kutwa Yetu (our day after tomorrow) enables decolonial, data-driven, human centered, and sustainable development. Tanzania’s rising youth population and lack of opportunities amidst rapid urbanization, guides our focus on addressing unemployment and inequality. The anchor of our movement is the word “yetu” (our), putting Tanzanian youth and their needs at the core of it all. We call for your support in peacefully reallocating power to our people and investing in conditions for long-term stability and success. Kesho Kutwa Yetu is strictly unaffiliated with any political party and committed to a prosperous Tanzania.

GHSEN’s research focuses on evidence-based strategies to advance healthcare delivery and foster innovation in Africa.
