Help provide water to The Mission of Pawaga

Donation protected
Hello, my name is Sam Meyer, and I am speaking for Father Evarist Thadei Mngulu and the community of Pawaga, Tanzania.

Problem Statement- Pawaga is in the Rift Valley where there is little annual rainfall. This is a problem that negatively impacts the success of agricultural processes by the community members and therefore their livelihood.

Who will benefit? – Your donations support The Mission of Pawaga and its community members. The mission has created its own action plan for improving their livelihood through agricultural innovation. Those who will specifically benefit from reliable access to water and quality food are children and mothers in the community.

Funding use – Your dollars will fund the installation of a drip line irrigation system. This system will irrigate a 2-acre plot of farmable soil and provide potable water, all of which is to be used by the mission and its members. What is so special about this system? The water pump is solar powered, and the pressure required for irrigation is supplied by gravity. This means no external power source is required, and the flow rate is slow enough to conserve water.

Project dates – Provided we are able to garner the proper funding, the construction may commence as early as 14 June 2021 and be completed by 3 August that same year.

Outcome – Firstly, the plot will be used to grow horticultural crops and fruits, such as, butternut squash, papaya, and green beans. Secondly, the project establishes agriculture sustainability for the community through access to reliable water. Thirdly, the project promotes water conservation, and environmental protection thanks to the specifically designed system. Overall, the project helps enhance the nutrition and livelihood of the community.

My role – I am a current undergraduate at Kalamazoo College. This project will serve as subject material for writing my senior thesis. I met Evarist through the NGO known as World Wide Opportunities on Organic Farms ( WWOOF ). During the project dates I will be staying with Evarist at Pawaga Mission, helping him design and implement the irrigation system. Once completed, I will return to Kalamazoo College to write and present my senior thesis. My personal goal while contributing to this project is to complete a design and analysis of the system by the time of my departure. I also want to effectively report on the community and how they will benefit from the project.

Thank you for your consideration and aiding this cultural and educational exchange. I can promise you progress updates throughout the project and share my completed thesis for those interested.
