Help Protect Lucasville: Our Community, Our Heritage, Our Future
Lucasville is more than a place on a map. It is our home, our history, and our heritage.
For generations, African Nova Scotian families have built their lives in Lucasville, creating a community rooted in resilience, culture, family, and belonging.
Today, our historic community is facing unprecedented development pressures that threaten to change Lucasville forever.
Large-scale residential developments are being proposed and approved in an area that lacks the infrastructure to support them. Our roads are already heavily travelled. We have limited sidewalks, inadequate public transportation, and community facilities that were never designed to accommodate thousands of additional residents.
Yet development continues to move forward.
We believe our historic African Nova Scotian community is being exploited for large-scale development without sufficient regard for the people, heritage, infrastructure, and long-term consequences.
And we believe it is time to stand together.
What Are We Fighting For?
The Lucasville Community Association (LCA) is working to challenge development decisions that we believe threaten the future of our community.
These include:
505 Lucasville Road: A proposed large-scale residential development that has already been the subject of a community appeal. More than 1,000 people signed a petition expressing concerns about development in Lucasville, demonstrating the significant level of community opposition. Despite these concerns, our appeal before the Nova Scotia Regulatory and Appeals Board was denied. We are now pursuing further legal avenues to challenge that decision.
The proposed 311-unit development across from Atlantic Splash Adventure: Another major development raising serious concerns about traffic, public safety, municipal planning policies, infrastructure capacity, and the cumulative impact of high-density housing in Lucasville.
These are just two examples of the development pressures facing our community.
Without meaningful intervention, we fear Lucasville could experience irreversible changes before proper planning, infrastructure improvements, and meaningful community consultation take place.
This Is About More Than Development
Historic African Nova Scotian communities have experienced generations of systemic barriers, displacement, and struggles to protect their land, identity, and heritage.
We cannot allow those experiences to be repeated.
Lucasville is a historic African Nova Scotian community with deep cultural roots. Its future should not be determined solely by development opportunities and financial interests.
We are not against housing. We are not against new neighbours. And we are not against responsible growth.
We are against development that moves forward without adequate infrastructure, meaningful community involvement, and respect for our historic community.
We believe municipal planning policies must be respected, development decisions must be accountable, and the people who call Lucasville home must have a meaningful voice in shaping its future.
Our community deserves safe roads, sidewalks, transportation options, adequate schools, accessible services, and infrastructure that can support growth.
We should not have to sacrifice our safety, heritage, or quality of life to accommodate developments that our community is not equipped to support.
Why We Need Your Help
Challenging development decisions is not easy.
It takes significant time, research, professional expertise, and financial resources. Legal appeals can be expensive, and community organizations like ours do not have the financial resources available to large development companies.
More than 1,000 people have already signed a petition to make their concerns heard. Now we need your help to continue this work.
The Lucasville Community Association is establishing this fundraising campaign to support ongoing efforts to protect our community and ensure that development decisions receive proper scrutiny.
How Will Your Donations Be Used?
All funds raised will go to the Lucasville Community Association to support community protection and advocacy efforts, including:
* Legal appeals and challenges concerning development decisions
* Court filing fees, hearing transcripts, legal advice, and representation
* Professional planning assessments and independent studies
* Research into municipal planning policies, zoning, and development impacts
* Community outreach, public meetings, and awareness initiatives
* Other authorized expenses directly related to protecting Lucasville’s heritage, safety, and long-term community interests
Donations will be managed by the Lucasville Community Association and used for approved community advocacy and related expenses.
Our Community Is Worth Protecting
The decisions being made today will affect our children, grandchildren, and generations yet to come.
Once land is developed, heritage is lost, and a community is fundamentally changed, we cannot simply turn back the clock.
This is not just about one property, one development, or one legal appeal.
This is about protecting an entire historic African Nova Scotian community and ensuring its residents have a meaningful say in its future.
We believe the people of Lucasville deserve a future shaped with them, not decided for them.
We have worked hard to make our voices heard. We have attended meetings, submitted concerns, gathered signatures, researched planning policies, and challenged decisions through the appropriate legal channels.
And we are not giving up.
Our community is not simply land available for development. It is a place with history, families, culture, and a future worth protecting.
Stand With Lucasville
Every donation, no matter how small, helps the Lucasville Community Association continue this important work.
If you cannot contribute financially, please share this fundraiser with friends, family, neighbours, and anyone who believes historic communities deserve to be respected and protected.
Together, we can continue advocating for responsible development, meaningful consultation, and a future that honours the people who built this community.
This is our home. This is our heritage. This is our future.
Thank you for standing with Lucasville.
