Help Me Protect Cúchulainn's Castle and the Historic Landscape of Dún Dealgan

A Community Campaign to Protect Our Heritage

I am asking for your support to help protect Cúchulainn's Castle and the surrounding historic landscape of Dún Dealgan, Castletown, County Louth, from a proposed large-scale residential development of over 1,000 homes.

Louth County Council has granted planning permission for this development, despite significant public concern about the potential impact on one of County Louth's most important archaeological and cultural landscapes.

As part of my efforts to highlight the importance of this site, I organised a public petition calling for the protection of Cú Chulainn's Castle and its surrounding landscape. The petition has now received the support of more than 10,000 people.

In addition, when the planning application returned to public consultation following the submission of Further Information by the developer, more than 200 formal objections were submitted to Louth County Council. This showed the depth of concern within the community about the potential impact of this development on our shared heritage.

While the Council attached 51 conditions to the planning permission, I do not believe these conditions go far enough to protect the archaeological, historical, cultural and visual importance of this unique landscape.

Why This Site Matters

Dún Dealgan, Castletown, is not just an ordinary piece of land. It is a place of exceptional historical, archaeological and cultural importance.

The site contains a medieval Motte-and-Bailey fortification associated with the Norman period and the de Verdun family. Archaeological evidence also indicates that this location may have been built upon an earlier Gaelic-Irish settlement, reflecting the layers of history that exist within this landscape.

Beyond its archaeological significance, Dún Dealgan holds a special place in Irish mythology. It is traditionally associated with Cúchulainn, one of Ireland's greatest legendary heroes, and with the epic story of the Táin Bó Cúailnge.

The landscape around the castle forms an important part of the setting and character of this heritage site. Once that setting is fundamentally altered, it cannot truly be recreated.

Protecting a Vulnerable Historic Landscape

Concerns have been raised that the proposed development could have a significant impact on the historic setting of these monuments.

The scale of the proposed development and its proximity to the site highlight the need for careful consideration of the archaeological landscape, including the possibility of previously unknown features that may remain hidden beneath the ground.

Professional archaeological investigation, including appropriate survey work, is essential to properly understand and protect what remains.

Organisations including An Taisce have raised concerns about the need for stronger protection for this important heritage landscape and have called for enhanced recognition and safeguarding of the monuments at Dún Dealgan.

Why I Need Your Help

The next step is to submit an appeal to An Bord Pleanála.

To give this appeal the strongest possible chance, I need to engage an independent planning consultant with experience in planning, heritage and development matters.

A professional and evidence-based appeal requires specialist knowledge, and the costs involved are significant. This is why I am asking the community and everyone who cares about this historic site to help.

What Your Donation Will Fund

Funds raised will be used towards:

- Engaging an independent planning consultant to prepare and submit an appeal to An Bord Pleanála.

- Obtaining specialist planning, heritage and archaeological advice where required.

- Covering the statutory appeal fee and associated professional costs.

- Supporting any additional expert input needed to strengthen the appeal.

I am committed to being transparent about how funds are used and will provide updates throughout the process.

If more funds are raised than are required for the appeal, any remaining funds will be used solely towards supporting awareness, protection and promotion of Cú Chulainn's Castle and the Dún Dealgan heritage landscape.

This campaign is not about opposing housing. It is about ensuring that development takes place in a way that respects and protects a site of exceptional historical and cultural importance.

More than 10,000 people have already made their voices heard.

More than 200 formal objections were submitted during the Further Information public consultation.

This overwhelming response shows how deeply people care about preserving this landscape for future generations.
