Help Promote Anti-Racism in St. Pete
***view our updates for most recent info***
Hello to everyone reading this,
We recently started offering Black Lives Matter and other anti-racism signs as well as anti racism book rentals for FREE to neighbors across St. Petersburg, FL, to help increase awareness about the injustices and racism facing our country, and to keep this movement visible and unignored!
Our goal is to allow folks in our community to visibly support those who have been continuously marginalized and to spread the message of anti-racism. In this era of COVID and social distancing, coupled with Florida summer, it is not always possible to be physically present to support this movement, and that is where the yard signs come in. We purchase them from Signs of Justice, which is a Black woman owned business.
We have also now started up a FREE anti racism lending library! We were gifted some wonderful books but we are looking to fund more anti racism books to build a variety of options, including a kids section. We believe that education for white people is crucial to understanding, transforming, and ending white silence, white privilege, white savior complex, & ultimately white supremacy.
This means that if we would like to continue to offer free BLM and other anti-racism signs, and book rentals to the people of St. Pete, we need more funding. And that’s where you come in!
100% of the funds raised go directly toward buying new signs and books. We purchase the signs and stakes from Signs Of Justice (https://www.signsofjustice.com/pages/about-us). The signs include but are not limited to Black Lives Matter, We Believe, No Justice No Peace, White Supremacy Is Terrorism, Hate Has No Home Here, & an MLK quote.
We are hoping to purchase more anti racism books from Cultured Books (a local Black woman owned bookstore) in the future (https://www.culturedbooks.com). The books we currently offer have been donated directly to us from locals and include How To Be An Antiracist, Me And White Supremacy, When They Call You A Terrorist, White Fragility, & St. Petersburg’s Historic African American Neighborhoods. We also have some Civil Rights Era books. We will also gladly accept any books from your personal collection or donated directly to us.
We have now upped our GoFundMe donation goal since this project has taken off and the signs And books are in high demand!
Any donation amount, even if it is a few dollars, can help put a sign in someone’s yard on a heavily trafficked road or in someone’s hands at a march, and help this movement become more visible and stronger locally, nationally, and internationally. Every $115 raised purchases 10 signs and 10 stakes. Books vary in pricing. We will also accept signs and books as a donation if you prefer to order them yourself. If you do not feel comfortable donating to our free sign distribution, please donate directly to Movement 4 Black Lives.
Right now we need to stand together and express that systemic racism, police brutality, and white supremacy is NOT ok and that we won’t be a part of it any longer. We also need to do the work that is needed of us and begin to dismantle our own unintentional and unconscious racist behaviors and feelings, which can then begin to dismantle the racial injustices in our society. The more neighbors in the Sunshine City that are willing to proudly stand up against racism and hate, the more we can do together locally and beyond.
