Give the Moni mushrooms a Voice and Protect the Nangaño Forests

Thanks to everyone who supported us in the past, the 3rd Moni Fest and the filming of the documentary Los Moní del Nangaño became a reality last year. Today, we are ready to take the next step towards the future of conserving the wild mushrooms and biocultural heritage of Chiapas, Mexico —and we need your support.

The Moní are a group of wild edible mushrooms deeply connected to the biocultural identity and Zoque and Chiapaneco heritage of the region. They include species of Lactifluus, which emerge with the first rains of the year, as well as Cantharellus coccolobae and Tremelloscypha gelatinosa, which appear after the midsummer dry spell known as the canícula. All of them are closely tied to very specific forests where the Nangaño (Gymnopodium floribundum) grows. Their presence reminds us of something simple but essential: if the forest disappears, so do the Moní and the knowledge and traditions that surround them.

Foraging these mushrooms brings families together, preserves knowledge passed down through generations, and keeps alive the connection between the people of central Chiapas and their land.

Complete the mini-documentary Los Moní del Nangaño, covering editing, animation, software, and specialized production work.

Organize the 4th Moni Fest at the Museo de la Ciudad de Tuxtla Gutiérrez, featuring cultural, educational, and culinary activities centered around the Moní and the Nangaño forests.

Create a mural at the Museo de la Ciudad, leaving a lasting tribute to these mushrooms and their importance to Chiapas.

Provide food and beverages to the staff of the 4th Moni Fest, as they will support the activities involving the event without any pay.

Advance scientific research, funding materials, shipping, and molecular analyses that will help us better understand the diversity of these mushrooms.

Dale voz a los Moní y protege los bosques de Nangaño

Gracias a quienes nos apoyaron anteriormente, el 3er Moni Fest y las grabaciones del documental “Los Moní del Nangaño” pudieron hacerse realidad. Hoy queremos dar el siguiente paso y necesitamos de tu apoyo.

Los Moní son un conjunto de hongos silvestres comestibles profundamente ligados a la identidad biocultural de herencia Zoque y Chiapaneca. Entre ellos se encuentran especies de Lactifluus, que aparecen con las primeras lluvias del año, así como Cantharellus coccolobae y Tremelloscypha gelatinosa, que brotan después de la canícula. Todos ellos están estrechamente vinculados a bosques muy particulares donde habita el Nangaño (Gymnopodium floribundum), y su presencia nos recuerda algo muy sencillo: si desaparece el bosque, también desaparecen los Moní y los saberes que los rodean.

Recolectarlos reúne familias, conserva conocimientos transmitidos entre generaciones y mantiene vivo el vínculo entre los chiapanecos del centro del estado y su territorio.

Tu apoyo nos permitirá:

Terminar el minidocumental Los Moní del Nangaño, cubriendo edición, animación, software y trabajo especializado.

Realizar el 4to Moni Fest en el Museo de la Ciudad de Tuxtla Gutiérrez, con actividades culturales, educativas y gastronómicas alrededor de los Moní y los bosques de Nangaño.

Crear un mural en el Museo de la Ciudad, dejando una memoria permanente de estos hongos y de su importancia para Chiapas.

Dar comida y bebida al staff del 4to Mon Fest, ya que ellos apoyarán de manera desinteresada a las actividades del mismo.

Impulsar su investigación científica, financiando materiales, envíos y análisis moleculares que nos permitan conocer mejor la diversidad de estos hongos.
