My name is Phyllis, and I’ve called western Massachusetts home for over 40 years. Living in this rural community, surrounded by trees and the beauty of nature, has always brought me peace and a sense of belonging. For seven years, I cared for my partner Mark as he lived with dementia. After his passing two years ago, I faced the difficult reality of losing not only him, but also the home we shared, as his daughter inherited the land and is now asking me to leave.

At 79, I live on a small social security allotment. I’ve worked all my life, mostly in jobs that didn’t pay much, but I’ve always found meaning in my art and in teaching metaphysical classes. I’m a silk painter, and lately I’ve been helping my community by creating “Turtle Crossing” signs to protect local wildlife. Music is also a big part of my life—I play guitar and have written songs about my journey as a caretaker, some of which I shared in my book, Hold On to What Is Good.

I own a small piece of land here and have managed to install a well and septic system, but I’ve run out of funds to finish building a modest home. I need help to pay off the house I’m having built and moved to my land, and to cover the costs of electricity, water, and plumbing hook-ups. Finding affordable housing has been nearly impossible, and I want to remain in the community I love. Any support will help me stay rooted in the place that means so much to me.
