On the evening of July 30, we were contacted by a local citizen who found a tiny kitten in a parking lot that was limping and unable to walk. Unable to keep and care for him, she reached out to our rescue for help. We immediately took him directly to a vet for evaluation and treatment. Roscoe, affectionately named by the attending vet tech, had suffered trauma to his right front leg and was unable to put weight on it. X-rays revealed a broken humerus. The options that were presented were not good - complete amputation of the leg or euthanasia. We chose neither. The next morning, Roscoe was transported to an orthopedic hospital in Columbia for a second opinion. Roscoe, although only 9 weeks old, was a candidate for surgery, which included inserting a plate with screws and a confined recovery until the break healed. Roscoe came through the surgery like a champ and within 4-6 weeks, we anticipate him will be a normal, playful kitten with a long, healthy life ahead. Surgery was expensive, and Roscoe will require more follow-up visits and potentially another surgery in a few months to remove the plate.
