In Arusha, Tanzania, 23 children spend their days in an informal community daycare, run by John "Passat" and his wife, Metrine.

The centre was started during the COVID-19 school closures, when many parents were forced to leave children at home while seeking income or managing unstable work. Rather than let children go without supervision or structure, Passat opened his doors to the neighbourhood and created a small daycare space in his home.

It began with 13 children.

Today, 23 children attend regularly.

Six of these children receive daily meals and clothing support through the centre. All 23 benefit from a safe place to spend the day, eat together, and play. Metrine, a teacher by training, is able to teach the kids basics in this safe setting.

As the number of children has grown, the physical space has not kept pace.

At the moment, meals are prepared and served in an area that was never designed to function as a kitchen or dining space. The children make do — but they deserve better than “making do.”

The Immediate Goal

The center is seeking $1,340 USD to:

These are practical upgrades. They are not extravagant. But they will meaningfully improve hygiene, safety, and the daily experience of the children who spend their time there.

It is about improving conditions so children can gather, eat, and grow in a space designed with care.
