A Bold New Mural Celebrating Chicano Art

A stunning new mural is coming to Franklin Boulevard, celebrating Chicano art, culture, and history and we need your help to make it happen!

Located at the ABC Tile building at 16th Avenue & Franklin Boulevard, this 25-foot-wide, 14-foot-tall mural will be a contribution to the legacy of the Royal Chicano Air Force (RCAF), the legendary Sacramento-based artist collective founded in the 1970s.

Inspired by History, Created for the Future

This mural is inspired by a 1975 concert poster designed by RCAF artist Juan Carrillo, for Cosumnes River College and printed at the Centro de Artistas Chicanos, the home of the RCAF. Many of the thousands of vibrant silk-screen prints produced at the time are now in private and public collections across the country. The re-imagined mural design will join other RCAF posters reproduced along Sacramento’s Franklin Blvd.

At its heart, the new mural features an iconic couple drawn from a 1946 illustration by renowned Mexican artist Miguel Covarrubias, tying two generations of artists together in one powerful image.

Who’s Behind This Project?

This mural will be painted by RCAF founding member Juan Carrillo, and accomplished, Stockton-based artist Carlos López, and made possible with support from the Franklin Boulevard Business Association.
