Our family is asking for help after Hurricane Lala flooded our parents’ home in Pahala and left them with the loss of almost everything they had.
My parents have never been the type of people to reach out and ask for help. They have always been the ones to lend a helping hand, show up for others, and give whatever they can—even when they didn’t have much to give themselves. Having to ask for help now is incredibly difficult for them, but after everything they have lost, we know they need the support of their community.
My parents are also food producers and work with Ancient Valley Growers in supporting food security for Hawaiʻi Island. We want the community to know that they are not just another family who lost their home. They are farmers who have dedicate their time to work the land and help feed Hawaiʻi. They contribute to the community in ways that go far beyond their own family, and now they are the ones who need a helping hand.
The flooding has made it extremely difficult for my parents to move forward. They are currently isolated in Pāhala and trying to figure out what comes next while dealing with the loss of their belongings, and the sense of security they once had.
We are creating this GoFundMe to raise enough money to help our parents begin putting the pieces back together. The funds will be used to replace essential belongings that were lost or damaged, cover immediate needs, and, if possible, help them find another safe place to rent.
We know that not everyone is in a position to donate, and we completely understand. Even sharing this fundraiser with friends, family, or others who may be able to help would mean so much to us.
This has been an incredibly difficult time for our family, but we are trying to stay hopeful and help our parents take things one day at a time. Any amount, no matter how small, can make a difference and help them get back on their feet.
We are incredibly grateful for all the help and support they have already received. My parents are overwhelmed by the love, kindness, and generosity everyone has shown them during this difficult time. We are forever grateful to each and every person who has donated, shared their story, checked in on them, or simply kept them in their thoughts.
Thank you from the bottom of our hearts to everyone who takes the time to read their story, donate, or share. Your kindness and support mean more to our family than we can put into words.
With love and gratitude,
Ortiz & Manzo Family
