Help Our Mum Kirin Make Special Memories With Our Family

My mum, Kirin Ann Hagicostas, is a devoted mother, wife, sister, auntie, cousin, and friend, and someone who has also been an incredible manager to so many people. She is the kind of person who always puts others before herself, no matter what she is going through.

She is an amazing mum who always puts us first, making sure we have what we need before anything else. She always takes us places and loves to explore, creating memories for us wherever she can. She would never let anyone hurt us and is always on our side, as long as we are doing the right thing.

As a wife, Mum is always there for Dad through the good times and the bad. They have shared so many memories together that will never be forgotten.

She is our rock.

She is also an incredible and dedicated manager at Wesley Mission, always striving to give people with disability the best quality of life and advocating strongly for them. She is known for being supportive, patient, and constructive, someone who truly brings out the best in her staff. The residents she cares for are treated like family, and she works tirelessly to make sure they feel safe, supported, and at home.

She loves all of her children deeply and treats their partners as if they were her own. She absolutely adores her 11 grandchildren and cherishes every moment with them. Mum is truly one of a kind.

In 2017, Mum was diagnosed with renal cell carcinoma and had her left kidney removed. She remained in remission for five years.

After turning 50, a tumour was discovered on her left thyroid. Over the next 12 months, things started to change. She began experiencing symptoms like what doctors initially thought was vertigo. A CT scan in April showed nothing, but by September her vision had worsened, and she was in severe pain. That is when doctors discovered a brain tumour in the left occipital lobe.

This was treated with radiation and surgery. After the surgery, Mum experienced almost complete loss of vision, which has progressively worsened.

Six months later, another tumour was found in the right occipital lobe, a mirror image of the first. This was also removed, followed by targeted radiation.

Around the time of that surgery, another tumour was found in the cerebellum just hours before the operation. It was too late to change the plan, and we were not told until weeks later. This tumour was inoperable, and from that point the only options were radiation and chemotherapy.

Before the most recent scans, Mum began experiencing loss of appetite, sudden weight loss, loss of coordination and mobility, and extreme fatigue. While treatment initially showed improvement, recent scans have shown further progression.

The cancer is now classified as metastatic renal cell carcinoma, and doctors have told us it is incurable, with no clear timeframe.

As her son, all I want is to make the most of the time we have with her and help fulfil her bucket list.

She has always dreamed of taking our family to Uluru, a place she once visited with a special friend and felt a deep connection to. She would also love to go on a cruise and visit Tasmania again.

At the same time, we are not giving up. If there are any options, treatments, or information out there that could help Mum, we will continue to search and explore every possible path.

More than anything, we want to make sure she is comfortable and has the best quality of life possible.

We just want to create as many special memories together as we can.

Any support, big or small, would mean the world to us. It will help us give Mum the chance to experience these moments with all of us as a family and create memories we will cherish forever.

If you are unable to donate, sharing this would mean just as much.

And if anyone has any knowledge, information, or expertise that could help in any way, please feel free to reach out to us.
