Like many of our neighbors who have been unhoused in Oakland, Steven is disabled and uses a wheelchair to get around. When the city swept a large and established encampment at 23rd & MLK last year, they failed to house vulnerable residents. Steven, who is 54, was forced to coordinate evacuating his things from 23rd and MLK, with no offers or shelter or even accommodations for his disability. Within the last year, he was swept and evicted again from nearby Northgate to Sycamore. Over the course of these sweeps, Steven was displaced from sleeping in his car to sleeping in a tent -- putting his health at greater risk over time.
Steven has now been offered shelter, and is getting some support from advocates to move his belongings -- but at this point, he has lost crucial valuables in the sweeps, and we’re asking community to step up to donate directly to Steven so he can replace his belongings. Much damage has already been done. Please help us support Steven in what’s next for him, and do our best to right some of the wrongs the sweeps inflict every day.
