Help our friend, Edward, win his asylum case
Donation protected
We cannot show you Edward’s face. That might endanger his family back in Cameroon. But look at his shoulders. What an incredible weight they carry. We all try to be brave in our lives. Edward is one of the bravest people you could ever meet. He organized peaceful actions against the unfair treatment of Anglophones by the Francophone government in Cameroon and was arrested. He escaped prison and that is when his journey began – first in his country, frequently moving to hide from the police, then to Nigeria, and finally, through several countries and the Darien Gap to cross the U.S. Border into California. He’s been separated from his family for a couple years. They are always on his mind. They are currently in relative safety, but Edward notes that right now, for Anglophones, nowhere in Cameroon is safe.
Asylum seekers who are returned to Cameroon face arrest, detention, violence, even disappearance and death. That is why federal law provides Temporary Protected Status to Cameroonians who can demonstrate continuous residence in the United States since April 14, 2022 as well as meet other criteria. Edward arrived in the United States in December of 2022 and is not eligible for Temporary Protected Status. We want him to remain safe here in our community and eventually bring his family.
Those of us who work with immigrants know that a) it's very hard to find an immigration attorney and b) once you have an attorney, they are costly. Edward now has an attorney after months of searching. With help from generous friends, we hope to pay his fees.
