Micha's disabled family needs help to build a home
Hello, my name is Michelle. I’m a poor trans woman from Mexico and I am asking you to please lend me your help. I am trying to help my family escape from extreme poverty and homelessness. The people in the pictures, they are my family. My brother Erwin, my aunt Alma and my mother Reyna. My aunt, she has diabetes and cannot properly walk without assistance anymore due to surgeries she has undergone on her toes. My brother has schizophrenia and a broken arm with a plate inserted on it. And my mother has had to put up for years with her abusive and violent husband. Who continues to stalk us to this day.
We are in desperate need of help. Me and my mother, we do what we can to help my aunt and my brother because they can’t care for themselves. And my aunt has no pension of any kind. We have to constantly find work just to pay bills and rent and not much else. And the only jobs we can get are minimum wage. We just can’t do this anymore on our own. We can’t be constantly worrying about where we’ll get kicked out of next.
It wasn’t always like this. We used to have a house. But then my dad kicked us out and there’s nothing we could do about it. We tried suing him but we couldn’t pay a lawyer. We tried getting a public one but he just wouldn’t even pay notice to his court appointments. And no one cared enough to really do anything about it. It’s been years since this, and we have gone from shelter to shelter and squatted in abandoned houses and finally when we could save some money, we found a place to rent. But even this place can’t be our home anymore. We’ll get evicted in two months at most.
But we have an idea to finally escape this situation, to really have a home to call our own. We’ll build it ourselves. And then we’ll finally know peace from all of this. I know it’s no easy task, but it isn’t impossible. In fact, we already have half of the work done. While me and mom might only make minimum wage, we do not have many needs beyond the basics, and so we have saved for years to do this.
We saved up around 70,000 pesos, and we reached out and talked to anyone who could help us and we got to work. My mom doesn’t have much of anything, but she did have a small plot of land that was the only thing her father left her. And over the course of several months me and her and friends and family that would help did all we could to stretch out our savings and put as much work as we could. We did the foundations, and the walls and roof, the electricity and some of the plumbing.
But after using all of our savings and doing everything that could be done, we only managed to get this far. If we get evicted soon as our landlord has told us she would we won’t have anywhere to go. We cannot live in a house that isn’t finished. And saving up to finish what is left will take us years, half a decade more. That is what it took to raise what we had, four years. It will take five years to raise the 100,000 pesos that we need to finish it. We don’t have doors, windows, floors, half the plumbing isn’t done and the electricity isn’t either. And then there’s the taxes we have to pay the government that my grandpa never paid them. We cannot save enough on our own anymore. We just don’t have the energy and time to go on like this anymore. My brother and my aunt needs us to be there for them.
This is where we turn to all of you for help. Please help us finish our home. Help my aunt and my brother and my mother to finally rest from all of this. To breath in ease again. To not have to constantly worry about if we’ll end up in the streets again or worse. It doesn’t matter what amount you donate, anything at all will do. Even just telling people about this and sharing it would help us so much.
