Help LAPC defend an asylum seeker from Guinea

Tax deductible
When a group of us from Lafayette Avenue Presbyterian Church flew this January to the U.S.-Mexico border, we met dozens of men, women and children who had traveled from around the world to escape violence that threatened their lives and the lives of their children.

Our meetings took place in Tijuana where they waited to seek asylum in the U.S., a process in which they were incarcerated, separated from family members and shipped from one detention center to another.

One of the asylum seekers we met is a teenager who fled for his life as he was targeted with extreme violence and torture after he had survived the murder of his family in a sectarian attack. Throughout his nine months of ordeal in Tijuana and as a detainee in several facilities, he stayed connected with LAPC members, who supported him and eventually got him released in July.

Since then, and with the support of many, he has been in the care of an LAPC member family and is now in the process of adapting to life in Brooklyn with the enthusiasm and optimism of a resilient 19-year-old.

As this young asylum seeker starts on a new journey here in the U.S., his legal case to remain in the United States will move forward.  We ask you to join us in assisting him with financial support to pursue his request for asylum to our government and his sponsor family’s request for formal guardianship in the state of New York.  Ultimately, these legal avenues will determine if he can remain in the United States - and could take several years.  We will provide meaningful updates as to what is happening with this young person.

This is a fundraiser to help with the costs of legal fees for this teenage asylum seeker.  We anticipate that the work will be ongoing and we plan to seek further support in the future.
