Help Opoku Save West Africa’s Lost Vinyl Records

Donation protected
West Africa's rich musical history is at risk of being lost forever.

Many of the region's iconic vinyl records from the 1960s to the 1990s—the golden age of highlife and traditional music—are disappearing. Many of these old records aren't even available on MP3 or Spotify. These vinyl records also preserve hundreds of years of traditional songs, passed down through generations and finally captured on vinyl during this era. This music holds stories, rhythms, and voices that shaped the cultural identity of West Africa, yet they are being thrown away or destroyed as their original owners pass on.

The Mission
Opoku, the heart behind Kumanini Records, is on a mission to rescue and preserve these priceless cultural treasures. He dreams of creating the largest archive of West African music, safeguarding sounds that cannot be found on MP3 or Spotify. To achieve this, Opoku needs to travel across Ghana and beyond, venturing into remote villages and towns to retrieve and purchase these records before they are lost forever.

Why This Matters
With little appreciation for vinyl in Ghana today, these records are often discarded, forgotten, or left to deteriorate. Once they’re gone, an entire generation’s musical legacy will vanish.

Opoku’s efforts are urgent. Every day that passes means another irreplaceable record could be lost. By traveling across Ghana and West Africa, he can rescue these treasures directly from families, collectors, and abandoned storerooms.

How You Can Help
Your donations will enable Opoku to:

  • Cover travel expenses to remote areas in Ghana and neighboring countries.
  • Purchase rare and endangered vinyl records from owners.
  • Transport and preserve these records safely for archiving and copying to mp3

This isn’t just about saving music; it’s about preserving history, culture, and identity. Opoku’s dream is to create a music museum and educational center where people can experience these records as they were meant to be heard—on vinyl, in their original form.

Every Dollar Makes a Difference
By donating, you become part of a movement to protect West Africa’s musical heritage, and all funds will go directly to Opopku. Whether it’s €5 or more, your contribution helps ensure these timeless sounds are not lost to history.
