Hi, my name is Jose Moyano, and I’d like to share the story of Nyoman, one of the most generous and genuine people I’ve met while traveling in Indonesia.
Nyoman lives in a small village in the mountains of northern Bali, surrounded by rice fields and jungle. He is the grandfather of two children and the father of a son who works hard to support the family. He has dedicated his life to caring for his family and supporting his community.
I met Nyoman while I was looking for a hidden waterfall in the mountains. The only way to get there was to contact him: he is the local guide who maintains the path, clears the trail, and safely leads visitors to this beautiful spot. After the hike, he invited us to his home, where he also runs a small cooking school and teaches how to cook the local food that people in his village eat every day.
During that day together, I was struck by his character: grateful, generous, and always thinking of others. As we walked and later shared a meal, he told me something that really moved me.
A few years ago, Nyoman built a small English school for the children in his village with his own hands. He is also the teacher: he prepares the lessons, finds materials, and does his best so the kids can learn a language that might one day give them more opportunities outside their village and access to better jobs. In many parts of Bali, spoken English is still quite limited, but I was able to communicate with Nyoman perfectly thanks to his effort to learn and to teach others.
If you’d like to get a glimpse of Nyoman’s world and see a bit of what he does for his community, you can visit his Facebook page here:
Recently, a flood destroyed most of the school. The space now needs repairs, and they lack basic materials: tables, blackboards, books, notebooks, pens and pencils… Nyoman keeps the school running with what he earns as a guide and from his cooking classes, but his income depends completely on whether tourists visit or not. There are months when he even has to use his own money, and sometimes his son needs to help him financially so that the kids can keep attending classes.
Listening to his story, seeing his commitment to the children and to his community, and realizing what this small school means for the future of the village truly touched me. That’s why I’ve decided to help him and to ask for your support.
How your donation will be used. The funds will go directly to:
- Repairing and rebuilding the space for the English school.
- Buying basic materials (blackboards, tables, chairs, books, notebooks, pencils, etc.).
Making sure that, over the next months, Nyoman can keep teaching without going into debt or depending only on the tourist season.
Every contribution counts. A small amount from here can make a huge difference there. This is direct help, with no intermediaries, for a man who has spent years giving everything he has to the children in his village.
How you can help:
- By making a donation, no matter how small.
- By sharing this campaign with your friends, family, or on social media.
If you have ever been to Bali, you know how special its people are. And if you haven’t, this is a chance to create real impact in the life of a beautiful village and to give its children a key tool like English so they can choose their own future.
Thank you from the bottom of my heart for reading Nyoman’s story and for any help you can give.
