Katelyn Smith, Cristina Gutierrez, and Jasmine Martin are three nurses from Houston volunteering for the "Master Cares Orthopedic Surgery Week" at the "Master Cares Bethlehem Community Hospital" in Bethlehem Uganda. For seven days, they will join a team of surgeons from Legacy surgical group to perform orthopedic surgeries for rural Ugandan patients who have little or no access to surgical care.

Uganda faces a severe shortage of medical resources.

The US performs about 9,700 surgeries per 100K people, while Uganda manages just 144 per every 100K people —an enormous difference of 98.5%. This means that Ugandans are only receiving 1.5% of the necessary surgeries compared to Americans.

In total, 6.8 million Ugandans need surgery, and 25% of the population requires at least one assistive device to walk or perform basic functions. Yet, only 4% have access to these devices.

With 40% of Ugandans living below the international extreme poverty line, the impact of untreated injuries is devastating, often affecting entire families and communities.
