I’m writing these words and conducting this Crowdfunder on behalf of my dear friend Nina Walsh, whose mother Gaynor recently passed away after being subjected to the worst kind of long-distance abuse that still continues today.

In effect, Gaynor has had the little one-bedroom bungalow she owned in Spain, her last remaining asset still containing many of her personal belongings, stolen from her by nothing more than a cold-hearted scammer she thought she could trust. Despite its modest size, this home has become a major source of stress for Nina and her family.

The back story is barely believable. In early 2024, Gaynor faced serious medical problems requiring hospital stays and care in multiple facilities, eventually leading to her admission to a care home in Somerset where she spent her final days before passing away in April 2025. Tragically, she did not receive the essential rehabilitation care she needed because social services could not complete the required financial assessment—simply because access to her Spanish property for valuation was refused. Every penny of her savings and pension went toward care, leaving her with nothing in her final months and a care home debt.

Gaynor was a kind, independent woman who worked hard her entire life and planned carefully for her future. Because of her generosity, she offered temporary help to a former neighbour who had recently been evicted and had nowhere else to live, allowing him to stay at her Spanish property while he sought alternative accommodation. She continued to pay all costs associated with the property—house insurance, water, electricity, and community charges—while the resident’s only contribution was a small monthly rent, which was sometimes withheld.

He now refuses to leave, despite Gaynor’s own personal requests when she was still alive, official written notice, and a Beurofax eviction order. While her property remains occupied it’s not possible to manage, sell, or settle her affairs. Coordinating with solicitors, a Spanish property management company, banks, and other authorities is now essential, but the legal, travel, and administrative costs required to reclaim the property could easily exceed its value.

Nina is now faced with the challenge of navigating the Spanish legal system to ensure her mother’s affairs are handled properly and the property secured. This is why I am reaching out for support to help Nina cover legal fees and court costs. Every donation, no matter the size, will enable her to take the next step in reclaiming her mother’s home, paying outstanding debts, and fulfilling her wishes.

Getting to know Gaynor in her final years, I remember a bright, compassionate lady with a wicked sense of humour and sense of pride that inevitably crumbled when she couldn’t receive the care that would have made her end of life more tolerable and brought back that beautiful smile. Instead, Gaynor remained in the depressing confines of the home, emptying her own meagre savings and pension.
