I am writing on behalf of my dad, Nick Todaro. My dad has always been there for me. He helped me through many hard times and he's an amazing grandfather to 4 grandchildren. I want people to know his story and I want justice for my dad.
In January 2023, he married a woman from Russia who was in the US on an expiring VISA. Within two weeks of meeting her, she convinced him to marry her. She said she was a nurse and if she gets sent back to Russia, she will be sent to the front lines of the war. She was in fear for her life and my dad had feelings for her and didn’t want that to happen to her. So, he did what he thought was right and what would keep her here to continue to be with her. She quickly moved in with him and things were going well. After a few months, I started to notice things that made me feel that her feelings were not genuine. She also seemed to miss Russia, as she would talk about how much better it is there, the food was better, the women are smarter and drive better. In April, we went to visit my sister a few hours away, we went to a water park where my dad had a medical emergency. My dad was having what looked (to me) like a heart attack. My sister and I started yelling for help, she ran to get help while I screamed “911”. Lifeguards quickly came to help out. Meanwhile, his “nurse” wife did nothing. She sat there, 5 feet away, looking around. (Probably thinking it was her lucky day- no prenup) Thankfully, my dad regained consciousness and was OK. We insisted he go to the hospital but he didn’t want to make a scene going into an ambulance. His wife said he was fine and should stay at the water park and continue the day. My sister, our husbands, and I all agreed that he should be seen by a doctor. So against his wife’s wishes, my husband drove him to the closest hospital. On the drive there, his wife chain smoked cigarettes in the car. My dad has COPD and shouldn’t breathe in smoke, he just had a medical emergency, and she was smoking around him. After this incident, I insisted to my dad that something wasn’t right, so he told his (fake lawyer- more on this later) immigration lawyer to pull the application for her to stay. After this she showed up at his job and cried and begged him to stay with her. She promised she would do better and help clean around the house. (She would sleep all day and leave a mess around the house then stay up all night watching tv. My dad has insomnia so this didn't help his poor sleeping patterns but she didn't care.) He didn't tell her he pulled the application, the lawyer tipped her off. He then told her he would be getting a post-nup agreement made up for her to sign. So he did. She never signed. His wife supposedly joined a cosmetic school 20 minutes away. She wanted him to pay for it but he was already running low on money since he added her to his health insurance and got a car for her to use. Magically, she got a friend to pay for the school for her. She left every morning at 8am on the dot and would arrive back home around 4pm every day. Oddly, if my dad was off from work on a weekday for whatever reason, she wouldn’t go to her school that day. She would often wear short denim shorts and sandals to her classes which I found matched oddly with the lab coat she had to wear. During the summer, we planned a trip to visit my sister again without my dad. I couldn’t wait. Twelve days without HER. We left on July 12, 2023. We were having a great time and at this point I was practically estranged from my dad. He wasn’t hearing me and I couldn’t stand his wife. Then, on July 15th, all of our worlds changed. My sister got a call from my dad saying that his wife is accusing him of pushing her and that she called the cops. He had just woken up from sleeping on the couch and was feeling very groggy. He was arrested and spent two nights in jail because it was the weekend. The next morning, I left with my husband to check on the house. A 4 1/2 hour drive, and she was gone. Her things gone. She had a massage table along with two suitcases, a rolling cart, clothes, shoes, and who knows what else. But somehow she managed to pack it all in her car without the ring camera picking up any movement. Bizarre. The day of July 15th, my dad and his wife went shopping and ran errands. He cooked dinner and around 5pm, she offered to make him an ‘Irish’ coffee. This was out of character for her because she never made him anything. She probably cooked 4 times since they were together, though she did cook for herself more often. After the coffee, my dad, like many dads, fell asleep on the couch watching tv. The next thing he knows, he’s waking up at 10pm and his wife is nowhere to be found. He checks the front and back where she is usually smoking. He goes out back again and calls for her, she replies and so he follows her voice. The backyard is grass from one side of the house to behind the house, the other side of the house had rocks and my dad had his boat parked on top of the rocks so the only rocks exposed were in a space about 3 feet wide by 2 feet. This was a peculiar spot for her to be sitting in because she usually only smoked on the back patio. She was sitting in the rocks and asked him to help her up. He took her hands and tried lifting. After multiple attempts, he went inside to get his inhaler because he couldn’t breathe from this (for him) strenuous activity. He went back out and went to help her again, as he is trying to help her, she was resisting, like dead weight, not helping at all. Finally she says to him “you pushed me”. She runs into the house and locks herself in the bathroom and calls 911. She told them he has guns so when they arrived, they had their guns drawn. Thank God he didn’t get shot because he had his phone in his hand when they got there and it was dark, it could have been mistaken as a gun. My dad doesn’t have a violent bone in his body and I know he didn’t touch her. I never once doubted his innocence. In the 6 months of marriage, there were no fights or arguments. My dad wouldn’t hit or push a woman. After taking this to court, it was noticed that his wife lied about so many things, she even told a slightly different story under oath and said she doesn’t drink alcohol which is a complete lie as she could out drink my dad. But she claimed he was a raging alcoholic. Now apparently my dad also fell on her when she was on the rocks. Ultimately, my dad lost his job where he was due to retire in 3 years and receive a large amount of money from his DROP plan. Gone. He sold his boat. He had just started a business making and selling guns as a hobby before meeting her and he wasn’t allowed to do that any more. He actually had to get rid of every gun he owned. He had to get rid of his truck too. My dad was stripped of his dignity, reputation, and money he was going to get for retirement. He lost 60lbs from stress and honestly hasn't been the same. He spent almost a year on parole, subject to monthly drug tests and wasn't allowed to leave the tri county area. He had to get permission to visit my sister when her house was destroyed from the hurricane. He worked for 25 years with the town of Davie. I was so proud of him because he went from electrician, to inspector, all the way to the building official. But all that was taken away because of a lie. A lie from someone who would do anything to stay in America. He had to take out a high interest HELOC to pay for his useless lawyers who let him settle for probation and plead no contest instead of doing research and showing forensic evidence to prove that he didn’t do it. They didn’t want to present the Sun-pass records of her going to all sorts of places when she was supposedly at cosmetology school. I believe my dad was drugged that night, that she (possibly with help) went out back and hurt herself on the rocks and planned the whole thing, I think she even had packed some of her stuff up before hand and without a doubt had coaching on what to do and what to say. The fake immigration lawyer: was this man that my dad paid thousands to, she insisted this was the best lawyer to help them. He represented himself as an immigration lawyer, HE SAID he was a lawyer, he is NOT. His wife knew what she had to do in order to stay in the US, and she did it. At the expense of my dad’s good life, she didn’t care what the consequences were, she didn’t care what happened to him, even though he took her in out of the kindness of his heart. She says Russia is so much greater than the US, the people are smarter, so why does she want to stay here so badly? I am asking for money to help him pay back his lawyer's fees. Unfortunately, this battle is not over yet and more fees are yet to come. My dad plans on finding an immigration lawyer and a new family lawyer to help with his divorce because his wife claims he owes her support for the next ten years. She wants him to pay her 50K in exchange for her agreeing not to sue him for damages and permanent injuries. He would also have to agree not to speak negatively about her to any third parties. (She doesn't want her fraudulent behavior publicized.) She has been in physical therapy and claims she can barely walk from her injuries, but she works as a waitress at a restaurant. Though he can try to get another loan and pay her off, he would rather give the money to lawyers and not her.
To any outsider looking in, this is obvious fraud and abuse of a senior citizen. Unfortunately, my dad's lawyers have failed him miserably so far. My dad now has a criminal record for something he didn't do, meanwhile she is reaping the benefits of the American government because she is a "victim" of domestic violence. If you can't donate, we kindly ask that you share his story so that no one else falls victims to this scam. We would love for his story to garner enough attention to perhaps get his record expunged.
