Nick is a lovely man with a genuine smile that somehow persists even when so much is falling apart around us. Right now, Nick’s world has been turned upside down.
Nick is a devoted husband, a loving father of three, and a talented carpentry millworker in New York. He is a documented immigrant, a business owner, and a man who has spent his life contributing to this country through his incredible spirit, craftsmanship and work ethic.
Despite having his papers in order, Nick was wrongly detained by ICE nearly three months ago. He was picked up running an errand and shuttled through a confusing and frightening maze of detention centers - first shipped to New Jersey, and then, sent hundreds of miles away to a facility some know as "Alligator Alcatraz" in Florida. For almost three months, he was locked away, separated from his wife, his children, and his business, for no justifiable reason.
This week, he was released by being dropped off on a road in Florida with no resources, even to make a phone call, and needed to make his way back to his family.
As that nightmare ended another materialized.
While Nick was locked up, the business he built though decades of hard work fell into disarray. Orders were missed, workers were unpaid, the momentum he spent years building halted as friends and family searched for him. As if that wasn’t enough, Nick has now been dealt another devastating blow: the building where his workshop is located is shutting down operations. He and his operations are being forced to move including all of his tools and large factory equipment. In New York City, finding and affording a new workspace for a carpentry business is a monumental and expensive challenge.
Nick is a man who gives everything to his family and his craft. He runs his own business not just to make a living, but to help others and to create beautiful, lasting things for the public good. He is now working overtime to fulfill his orders and the impossible task of resurrecting a severely impacted business whilst relocating his entire workshop, all while carrying the emotional and financial scars of a wrongful, three-month imprisonment. Please do your best to elevate this message and help out this guy.
Where the Money Will Go
We are raising $200,000 to give Nick and his family and his workers a fighting chance. This fund will address the immediate crises created by his detention and the forced relocation:
· Business Recovery & Relocation: The most urgent and significant cost. This includes securing a deposit and first months' rent on a new workshop space, hiring movers to transport heavy machinery and materials, and reconnecting utilities in a new location.
· Lost Income & Catch-Up: Nick and his employees were unable to work at capacity for three months. This fund will help cover the family’s living expenses—mortgage, utilities, groceries—that piled up while he was detained and get them current on bills.
· Legal Fees: The fight for justice isn't over. We need to cover the legal costs associated with fighting this wrongful detention and ensuring it never happens again.
· Replacing Business Assets: Any materials that were spoiled, tools that were lost, or income from jobs that had to be cancelled while he was held.
Nick is a hardworking, documented immigrant who was punished for his appearance. He is a small business owner, a father, and a friend. He came home to a mountain of problems, yet he still greets everyone with that same love and smile.
Again, please donate what you can and share this campaign widely. Let's get Nick back on his feet, back to his craft, and back to providing for his beautiful family.
Thank you for your kindness and support.
