Help Nepal COVID-19 and Flood Victims

Spende geschützt
Dear friends,

My name is Dr. Ramu Kharel, an emergency medicine doctor with background in Public Health. I am also the founder of HAPSA and HAPSA Nepal. I am reaching out to you because Nepal needs your help. As you know, HAPSA Nepal has been working in Nepal since 2012, and specifically after the 2015 devastating earthquake. HAPSA Nepal has been supporting rural health care facilities, educating, conducting health/eye camps with local partners, and advancing public health education. S

Since COVID-19 pandemic last year, HAPSA Nepal has been creating public health education material, conducting training webinars, live Q&As, availability of volunteer doctors for tele help, among other things.

Now, Nepal is in the brink of humanitarian crises, with the worst viral transmission rate in the world. Per capita, Nepal is now worse than India in COVID-19 crises. Medical infrastructure and the health system are collapsing.

During the second wave in Nepal, HAPSA Nepal has been active on multiple fronts. HAPSA Nepal has created a database of volunteer nurses and doctors that are accessible to local governments and isolation centers. HAPSA Nepal has also partnered with other local and international organizations to conduct countrywide training in COVID -19 clinical concepts. HAPSA Nepal team has also helped create home isolation kits. As part of COVID Alliance Nepal, I have been directly involved in advising government entities in creation of protocols/blueprint for isolation centers, and treatment protocols for patients.

Today I am writing asking for your help. Nepal needs help from multiple fronts, and HAPSA Nepal will focus on keeping as many people home as possible to lower the strain in the already collapsed Nepali health system. 80% of COVID-19 patients can be taken care of at home. For now, it seems that the only way Nepal can handle the burden of this pandemic is with home isolation. Currently, Nepal has less than 2000 ICU beds, and less than 700 Ventilators. We need as many people to stay home as possible.

What does HAPSA need funding for?

As a pilot initiative, HAPSA Nepal along with COVID Alliance Nepal worked in building a home isolation kit for the municipality of Dhangadhi (one the the most hard hit areas in Nepal). Given its utility, we want to expand the kit’s use across the country.
The home isolation kit will have following items:

Surgical Masks, Pulse Oximeter, Thermometer, Soap, hand sanitizer, Medications (Vitamin D, Zinc, Vitamin C, Paracetamol, Cough Syrup), Home Isolation and Quarantine detailed instructions, and Emergency phone numbers.

The estimated cost for each kit is Rs. 2000, or $20. Our fundraising goal is $40,000 for the home isolation kits.

Currently, for the first phase, we have picked hot spot municipalities based on the need to deliver these home isolation kits. Our process of disseminating these kits will be as below:

1) Municipality connects with HAPSA regarding local need or vice versa
2) Introductory discussion call with local leadership and HAPSA leadership
3) Request letter/email to be by municipality to HAPSA
4) MOU to be signed by both parties
5) Training of local FCHVs and Municipality staff by HAPSA on the KIT and distribution
6) Delivery and distribution of the kit
7) Supporting Images, Videos and data on the distribution by Municipality to HAPSA

The funds will be directly go into procuring the items, assembly and delivery.

HAPSA Nepal has always worked on public health education from hand washing to COVID-19 training. On May 13th, HAPSA founder Dr. Ramu Kharel conducted a 4 hour training that was attended by almost 300 doctors and nurses from around the country. HAPSA Nepal will continue to train isolation centers, frontline doctors, and clinical care providers, and funds will be used for this activity as well.   This fund will go directly in making isolation kits available, local programming and training.  Estimated cost $10,000.

Target fundraising goal: $50,000 USD

HAPSA is a 501c3 registered organization in the United States, and HAPSA Nepal is registered as an NGO in Nepal as well.

I am directly connected to HAPSA Nepal as a founder and work closely with the leadership of HAPSA in advising. The money will directly go to HAPSA Nepal for completion of the Home Isolation Kit project.

Friends, you might know me directly or have seen my dedication and work for Nepal, especially since the 2015 earthquake. I am asking you to contribute again, and forward this along to your friends.

Thank you,

Ramu Kharel, MD, MPH
