My husband Luis was arrested for noncitizenship while driving to work last Friday and has been in an ICE detention center ever since. We had just spent all our money moving from the city to the country, hoping to build a better life for our family. Now, only two weeks later, I have to move again, and I am overwhelmed with expenses and the heartbreak of downsizing everything we worked so hard for. Losing my dream home and car is devastating, and I am scared about what comes next. Luis will likely need a flight to Mexico when he is deported, and I won’t be able to help with that. He hasn’t been to Mexico in over 20 years, so this isn’t just scary for me, but also for him.

Luis has always worked hard for our family, providing us with an amazing lifestyle as a foreman for an erosion control company. We’ve been together since 2020, and our four kids—my two bonus daughters, our two sons, including a nonverbal three-year-old who is his dad’s best friend, and a newborn just three months old—are struggling with this sudden change. Overnight, I became a single mom with one income, facing the possibility of wage garnishment and a huge hit to my credit. This is my worst nightmare for my kids and myself, and I am doing everything I can to keep us together and safe.
