On Saturday, March 14, around 2:00 in the afternoon, Nathan was working in the barn when he noticed the smell of smoke. At first, he thought someone was burning trash on the west side of the property, but after checking, he realized the smoke was coming from the wall between the old two-story barn, built in the early 1900s, and the attached dairy barn from 1989. Nathan quickly told Misty to call the fire department and rushed to save the animals and equipment. There were about forty ewe sheep with lambs, two rams, four horses, and thirty chickens in the barns. Thanks to their quick action, almost all the animals were moved to safety, though only a few pieces of equipment could be saved before the fire completely engulfed both structures. From the moment Nathan first saw the flames to when the roof started collapsing was only about twenty minutes. Fire departments, friends, and neighbors arrived quickly and managed to save the adjacent shed and a second home on the property. Still, the loss of both barns is devastating. There was no insurance on the buildings, so Nathan and Misty now face a tremendous financial hurdle. Nathan and Misty are known for their kindness and willingness to help anyone in need. This loss is more than just a barn—it's a lifetime of memories for Nathan, his eleven siblings, and their families, who grew up working and playing in that barn. Any help for them financially would be greatly appreciated as they work to rebuild and recover from this tragedy.
