Help my sister keep her home, for Christmas

Donation protected
My sister Robyn is a single mom of 2. Earlier this year she found herself in a pretty rough situation. Struggling at any point in this life is exhausting and overwhelming. Struggling during the holidays is unimaginable. I would like to share some words from my sister to help describe the need for this fundraiser.

I’ve been getting questions about what the kids want for Christmas and I’ve had a really difficult time responding because what we really want for Christmas is to keep a roof over our heads.

We really need support. I’ve tried everything and everywhere, to little avail. Community Action rental assistance was our last hope. They won’t help until you’re getting evicted, and you can only request an appointment by phone on the 8th of the month and online on the 15th of the month. I called the second they opened on the 8th, and they had a recording stating they weren’t accepting any more appointment requests. We are 3 months behind on rent and will likely receive official eviction notice in the coming days. When we do, we have nowhere to go and no means of getting a new place.

The last 6 months have been extremely challenging for us. After the traumatic relationship ending left us with no income or working vehicle, I was worried about how I’d be able to overcome these difficulties and move forward, but I knew we’ve been through worse and I was confident I’d figure it out.

Then came the rapidly declining mobility which led to nonstop appointments and resulted in an unexpected medical diagnosis for Madi. One which requires continued appointments and heavy medication with equally heavy side effects. While her mobility has returned to normal, maintaining it will require treatment for life. This means ongoing appointments and medication. Her daily and weekly meds cause appetite suppression, making it a challenge to get her to eat most days. Additionally, at least once per week she is unbelievably sick as a side effect of her strongest meds. Essentially bedridden, suffering from severe headache and uncontrollable vomiting. Adding insult to injury, her already delicate mental health has suffered through this as well.

I have no problem working, I really enjoy working. I’ve worked since I was 15 years old aside from when necessity required me to be a stay at home mom. I only left my last job so that my ex could keep hers, never expecting it to blow up so horrifically in the end. I’d be working now if I could, while finishing school. I’ve been offered jobs that I couldn’t accept due to lack of transportation and help with the kids. Especially with Madison’s health, I can’t just leave her alone all day while I work. But ultimately, the lack of transportation hinders me most. If I had a working vehicle, I’d be able to work on my own schedule. Door-dashing and other gig work would allow me to supplement my student loan “income” and keep us afloat, while allowing me to set my own schedule to care for Madison through the highs and lows, without risk of termination.

Donations will go towards paying rent here if possible, finding a way to survive after being evicted from here, getting a working vehicle, and/or paying other household/medical bills.

I will try Community Action again on the 15th, though I worry it may be too late.

If you’re able to give, that is very much appreciated. If you can share, that helps too. Thanks so much for your time and consideration.

Happy Holidays
