My heart is broken as I write this.

During what should have been a season of joy and celebration, my parents’ lives were turned upside down. My dad (an immigrant, a tireless worker, a provider, a dreamer) was the victim of a devastating scam that wiped out his and my mom's life and retirement savings.

My parents were finally standing at the edge of a long-awaited dream. After decades of sacrifice, they were preparing to retire next year. They talked about rest, about time together, about finally enjoying the life they worked so hard to build. In a matter of moments, that dream vanished.

My dad came to this country with no English and not a high academic education - only determination. Through sheer grit, long hours, and relentless perseverance, he built two businesses with his work and my family's help. He works nonstop, always believing that if he works hard enough, he could create stability and security for his family. He did everything “right.” And yet, he was taken advantage of.

What hurts most is not just the financial loss, but the emotional toll. The shame. The disbelief. The heartbreak of realizing that a lifetime of discipline, sacrifice, and hope can be erased by someone else’s cruelty.

Watching my parents carry this pain, especially during the holidays, has been devastating.
