Help my mom recover as we close our family store.
Donation protected
Hi, my name is Derek Luu and I am fundraising on behalf of my mom.
My mom owns Yue Wa Market, a beloved grocery store in LA’s Chinatown. For 18 years, she has provided affordable and fresh produce to tourists, locals, families, seniors, and low income residents. Through the 2008 recession, rapid gentrification, the rise of anti-asian hate crimes, the pandemic, and ICE raids, my mom has persevered. Her store is mentioned heavily in the LA times and even recognized by LA city hall. She makes me so proud to be a Chinatown kid.
Unfortunately, we will be closing Yue Wa Market for good in September. It pains me to see her let go of something she has poured everything into.
2 years ago, a burglar assaulted my mom and stole her purse. The burglaries have not stopped and my family has been repeated victims of an organized group of burglars that target members of the Chinese community. They have broken into our house 3 times now.
We have also made several police reports. We have spent a lot of money to install window reinforcements and new security systems with cameras. Still, the criminals have not stopped nor have they been caught.
On June 11th 2025, the burglars returned and assaulted my sister leaving her also severely traumatized. My family is now left with little money to afford medical bills, dues from new security measures, and costs from the store that has supported us and our community.
I am devastated that this is happening to my own mom.
My mom will never personally ask for help. She is a deeply caring person who has raised me to help others in need. This time my mom is in real need.
This fundraiser will provide relief to her, help my family recover, and resolve the closure of our family store. Your donation means multitudes and we thank everyone for their support throughout these 18 years.
If you are in LA, my mom will be at the store until September. Please visit her to show your support at:
