Family, friends, and everyone who’s reading this, I’m asking for your help from the bottom of my heart.
2 weeks ago, my mother, Carol Walcott, lost everything in a tragic house fire in Parfait Harmonie, West Bank Demerara, Guyana. This was the home she spent nine years building with her bare hands and hard-earned savings.
She tirelessly worked in the US for years as a single mother raising me and my brother and as a grandmother of three. She sacrificed her own comfort so she could return to the land she loves and finally enjoy a peaceful retirement. That dream went up in flames.
An electrical fault caused the fire, and within minutes, her home was gone. She was locked in the backyard, trapped as the fire spread. It was the neighbors who heard her cries, broke down the fence, and pulled her to safety. She was barefoot, with nothing but the clothes on her back.
A kind local shopkeeper gave her shoes, a blanket, and enough comfort to make it to her sister’s home on the East Coast, where she’s now staying. But she has lost absolutely everything.
For those of you who have had a strong woman in your life a mother, grandmother, or elder who worked her entire life to finally rest in a home she built you understand what it means to have that taken away in an instant. She is devastated, and yet she remains proud and full of faith.
