Sixteen years ago, my dad suffered his third heart attack and a stroke, which left him bedridden for a long time. The years that followed were incredibly hard on my family, as the cost of surgeries, treatments, and medication became a massive financial burden. Through it all, my mom was the heart of our home—she was my dad’s caregiver, managed the household, tended the garden and the farm, cared for my grandmother, and still held a full-time job.
On top of everything she was already juggling, our family faced another devastating blow this past year when a faulty electrical wire sparked a fire that burned our farm and barn to the ground. Rebuilding became an urgent priority, adding yet another heavy burden to my mom’s shoulders—emotionally and financially.
Three months ago, we lost my dad. My dad's passing took quite an emotional toll on all of us, and especially my brother, Aleksandar, who was with him in his last moments, all while in the middle of a very contentious divorce. My brother did his best to protect me and my mom from the financial hardships he endured himself. The extent and details were all unknown to us, until October 24th. A heartbreaking and unimaginable tragedy struck us again when my brother passed away from a very sudden heart attack. Age 38 just 2 weeks after his birthday.
Now, on top of the loss of her husband and son, my mom is facing crushing financial pressure. She is responsible for overwhelming loans she never should have had to bear. Her wages are being garnished, and she brings home very little each month. With the help of friends and family, we’re trying to sell most of the farm machinery, which may cover about half of the debt, but it still leaves a significant amount unpaid. Joey (my husband) and I are doing everything we can to support her, but our savings can only stretch so far. Paying off these loans is the only way forward for my mom to feel any sense of normalcy again—to breathe, to rest, and to begin healing from everything she has endured.
We are reaching out to our community with humble hearts, hoping for support during this incredibly difficult time. Any help would mean the world to my mom and to me, and would bring us closer to lifting this burden from her shoulders so she can finally begin to find peace.
