As many of you know, I'm a member of the LGBTQ+ community and have dedicated much of my life to ensuring equity for all people including those who are marginalized. I recently posted on Facebook a message in support of trans people and I received an outpouring of compassionate responses along with many questions about how to help people who feel scared and unsafe during these unprecedented times in this country. I decided to start this fundraiser to raise money for a LGBTQ+ friend of mine who is in dire need of help. I will keep this person's identity anonymous for obvious reasons. He is a friend from when I lived in Dallas and his roommate turned out to be homophobic and transphobic and ended up bullying and physically threatening my friend. He was then fired for being LGBTQ+. He was forced to move out and move back to his home town to live with family to seek shelter and safety. During the first week of the new presidential administration, his worst fears came true. His family, feeling emboldened by the administration and then feeling that supporting their son was incongruent with their Christian faith, a couple of nights ago they told him he is not loved, accepted, welcome, or wanted in their family home any longer. Needless to say, he is beside himself. He has no job, no money, likely no shelter, and no support. If you are looking for ways to support people in need, and help right the wrongs of what is happening in this country right now, I ask for you to consider donating to this cause. I know it's only one person. But, it will make a world of difference to someone who is the victim of hatred, bigotry, and discrimination.
