Help My Grandmother Live Pain-Free

Donation protected
Hello, my name is Melannie Lopez and I'm creating this GoFundMe on behalf of my grandmother and family in Guatemala.

My grandma first broke her hip in 2020, leading to a hip replacement surgery and year long recovery that was incredibly difficult for her as she was 80 at the time. Last year, she fell again- breaking her other hip and needing another hip replacement. However, Guatemalan healthcare is not great, and because of medical malpractice the hip implant was put in incorrectly. This has caused her severe chronic pain that has completely changed her quality of life. My family has done everything they can to ease her pain without having to put her through another life-threatening surgery. My family has spent close to $100k on medical supplies, doctors' visits, ambulances, etc to make sure she is taken care of. Despite our efforts, she is still completely bed-ridden and unable to walk or stand due to her debilitating pain. Since her fall, she has dealt with other complications, such as a severe infection at the site of her surgical wound, and an abscess on her leg and foot that nearly led to an amputation. This is all because of medical malpractice and negligence from her surgeon, who denied her infection until it was nearly too late. Even then, it was through the efforts of my family taking care of her that she is still with us today- they've fought for her and have sacrificed so much for her well-being.

My family has been through hell in the past year- both my grandma's condition and my grandpa's passing in May have taken a huge toll on everybody. It hurts me to know that my family is struggling and I would love to be able to continue to help my grandma in any way I can. My mom and I are the only family members here in the States, and while we would love to be there for her, we would rather use the money to help her get medicine, supplies, and food.

Our current hope is to remove the implant to take away all her pain. Although she would never be able to walk again, we hope that it can at least give her a chance at a happy, pain free life. This surgery is incredibly risky, but it's our last resort. Now that her condition is much more stabilized and she is infection free, my family and her have decided to move forward with removing the implant.

I'm asking for any support for my grandma. Anything would be greatly appreciated! Prayers, support, contributions, words of encouragement would mean so much. All donations would go towards covering the surgery. Guatemala has no medical coverage, so we have been paying for everything out of pocket. My mom and family have given so, so much to keep my grandma here with us and I'd like to be able to let them breathe a bit.

Please, if you're comfortable, help my family and I in taking my grandma's pain away. I would do anything to see her smile without any suffering.

Thank you!
