In the early hours of New Year’s Day, our family experienced a devastating loss when a fire broke out in my parents’ apartment building and destroyed their unit. The apartment they rented was part of a building located within a commercial plaza in Baldwin Park.

By the grace of God, my parents were not home at the time. They had stayed with us on New Year’s Eve, and had they been there, this tragedy could have taken their lives.

While firefighters were able to put the fire out before it spread further, the building suffered severe and irreversible structural damage. It is clear that my parents will not be able to return. They have lost the place they called home for over 30 years — the home where my younger sister and I grew up and where so many of our childhood memories were made. Although we are grateful that no lives were lost, my parents lost

everything inside their home. From clothing and furniture to everyday essentials, all of it is gone. Material things can be replaced while life cannot.

One thing is for sure, starting over after 30+ years is overwhelming. Although our family is all chipping in to help in every way that we can, I am setting up this GoFundMe on their behalf to help cover relocation costs and to replace basic necessities as my parents and my sister work to rebuild their lives. Any donation, no matter the amount, as well as sharing this fundraiser, is deeply appreciated. Thank you for your kindness, prayers, and support during this incredibly difficult time.

En las primeras horas del Día de Año Nuevo, nuestra familia sufrió una pérdida devastadora cuando se produjo un incendio en el edificio de apartamentos donde vivían mis padres y su unidad quedó completamente destruida. Su apartamento formaba parte de un edificio ubicado dentro de una plaza comercial en Baldwin Park.

Por la gracia de Dios, mis padres no se encontraban en casa en ese momento. Habían pasado la víspera de Año Nuevo con nosotros, y de haber estado ahí, esta tragedia podría haberles costado la vida.

Aunque los bomberos lograron apagar el incendio antes de que se propagara más, el edificio sufrió daños estructurales graves e irreversibles. Está claro que mis padres no podrán regresar. Han perdido el lugar que llamaron hogar por más de 30 años — el hogar donde mi hermana menor y yo crecimos y donde se formaron tantos recuerdos de nuestra infancia. Aunque estamos agradecidos de que no se hayan perdido vidas, mis padres perdieron todo lo que había dentro de su hogar. Desde ropa y muebles hasta artículos básicos del día a día, todo se perdió. Las cosas materiales se pueden reemplazar, la vida no.

Una cosa es segura: comenzar de nuevo después de más de 30 años es abrumador. Aunque toda nuestra familia está aportando y ayudando en todo lo que puede, estoy creando este GoFundMe en su nombre para ayudar a cubrir los gastos de reubicación y reemplazar las necesidades básicas mientras mis padres y mi hermana trabajan para reconstruir sus vidas.
