The Journey of Brian Macneir: An Update on the Road to Recovery 03/2026

My father, Brian Macneir, is 63 and has spent his life being the most charismatic, helpful person in the room. For the last several years, however, the roles have reversed. This journey began with a life threatening injury and has evolved into a long, complex fight for his health, his housing, and his future. We have seen incredible miracles along the way, many of them thanks to the people reading this, but the road ahead still requires a bit more climbing.

The Backstory: A Seven Year Battle

In 2017, a freak accident with a chicken bone caused a life threatening intestinal injury. That led to emergency surgery and a colostomy bag that he had to wear for nearly eight years because we simply could not get the coverage needed for a reversal. During that time, his health spiraled. He developed nine hernias, spinal issues, and vision problems. Most dangerously, he suffered from severe heart conditions and calcified valves due to untreated high blood pressure that at times reached 200+/120+.

Despite being buried in over $280,000 of medical debt, he had no choice but to keep working. That physical strain likely made his conditions worse, but he did what he had to do to survive. Thanks to your previous donations and the Broward Medical relief program, he finally received the surgeries that saved his life. The doctors told us plainly that without those procedures, the complications could have been fatal.

Where We Stand Today: Progress and New Hurdles

We have some amazing news to share: his blood pressure is finally under control thanks to proper medication and lifestyle changes. This is a massive weight off our shoulders. However, the recovery is far from over.

He is currently preparing for what we hope are his final surgeries, including a final cataract procedure. We are also investigating chronic stomach pains that may be linked to recalled surgical liners used in his previous repairs. Because of these re appearing hernias and ongoing pain, he is physically unable to work full time. He is being incredibly resilient and creative to make ends meet, picking up light task work for a friend for about 2 to 4 hours a day. He is strictly limited to no lifting, but he is doing everything within his power to contribute while we navigate the disability process.

The Path to Stability

Our biggest challenge right now is housing and his legal status for SSDI. We previously moved him off his boat to save on massive monthly fees, and he is currently in a short-term living situation for the next six weeks. We are working hard to find him a long-term, affordable room, ideally around $500 a month(Which is near impossible in Fort Lauderdale).

This is complicated by the fact that he has no FICO score after a decade of medical debt. We recently opened his first line of credit to fix this, but it will take about six months for a score to even appear. Meanwhile, our legal appeal for his SSDI is moving slowly. We originally faced a denial due to clerical errors in his records, and while we are fighting that, the timeline is uncertain.

How You Can Help

I am doing everything I can from where I am stationed to manage his logistics and costs, but South Florida is expensive, and I cannot upkeep his insurnace, phone, and frequent needs of floater cash, while supporting my own household at this time. We are trying to get him to a point where he can settle in a stable home while his health and his legal claims catch up.

Every dollar donated goes directly into his savings to secure a deposit for a permanent room and to cover his basic needs. If you cannot donate, sharing this story or keeping him in your prayers means the world to us. God has seen us through the worst of this trial, and we know there is a way out. You have been a huge part of that reason.

With gratitude,

Sean and Brian Macneir
