Hey Everyone,
Thank you for taking the time to be here, it truly means more than I can express. I’m writing this with a heavy heart, as nearly 72 hours have passed since Hurricane Melissa, a historic, catastrophic Category 5 storm, made landfall directly on my home parish of Westmoreland, Jamaica.
This was the first storm of such strength to ever strike Jamaica head-on. Within hours, the paradise we knew was transformed, wind, rain, and fear tearing through homes, livelihoods, and lives. Many communities remain cut off, surrounded by floodwaters and debris, without power, clean water, or communication.
My birthplace and childhood home in Bamboo, Burnt Savanna as well as surrounding communities like, Blackness, Townhead, Petersfield, and Sav, were devastated. Families I grew up with lost roofs, entire homes, crops, everything. For two full days, we couldn’t reach our loved ones. The silence was unbearable.
When contact finally came, it was thanks to a close family friend, Jason Barnett, who risked his safety to reach these isolated neighborhoods. Despite losing his own roof, he helped reconnect families, traveling miles through bush and floodwaters to bring news that loved ones were alive. His courage reminds me that even in disaster, community is what keeps us standing.
Now, our people need help.
This fund will go directly to rebuilding lives and homes in our local communities in Westmoreland, starting with immediate essentials:
• Food and clean water
• Baby and family care supplies
• Basic clothing
• Screws, tarps, and power tools
• Roofing and repair materials
Every contribution, no matter the size, will directly help families in crisis, ensuring aid gets into the hands of those who need it most, not filtered through red tape.
We may have lost lives, roofs, roads, and crops, but we haven’t lost hope. With your help, we can start rebuilding what was taken and restore safety and dignity to our communities.
How you are related to the person(s) you are raising funds for: The funds raised for me and will be used to support my extended family members, friends and neighbors in the local neighborhood.
Your transfer plan to get the funds from your GoFundMe to the intended recipient(s): I will be purchasing various items and supplies needed and traveling to Jamaica to directly work with distribution of items and funds. While in Jamaica, on the ground support and plans will be put in place with funds raised.
How the funds will be spent: emergency food and supplies, distribution to assist with fixing structural damages and rent/emergency relocation if needed.
Thank you for reading, for sharing, and for caring. Please keep Jamaica, and especially Westmoreland, in your prayers.
With gratitude and hope,
Roshelle ♥️
