My name is Charang Bendu, and I’m about to begin my first year as a full-time 3rd grade English Language Arts teacher at Calvin M. Rodwell. After interning with these students in 2nd grade, I’ve seen firsthand how bright, motivated, and caring they are. Now, as their teacher, I want to give them the best possible classroom experience—one filled with books, lots of learning materials, and everything they need to succeed.

This year is especially challenging because education funding is being cut by the government at every level, making school resources scarce, and my classroom is starting from scratch. Furthermore, over 50% of Baltimore City Public School systems’ students and family populations are economically disadvantaged and face challenges related to academic achievement and resource allocation, particularly in comparison to other districts in Maryland.

I want to create a space that is well-organized, creative, and supportive, where every student feels inspired to learn and grow. These students are truly special, and I want to provide them with every opportunity I can—something I couldn’t do as an intern.
