Help Murugan Get His Rickshaw
Donation protected
Our dear friend Murugan lives in Tiruvannamalai. Over the six months we lived in India, he became an integral part of our family. Some will know that we and several in our community of meditators have been sending money to Murugan on a regular basis, but he could use more help than what we’ve been able to contribute.
Like so many in Tamil Nadu, he comes from difficult circumstances. In addition to profound poverty, both of his parents had leprosy and died relatively young. He has worked extremely hard for the chance at a better outcome than what was expected. Initially when he tried to transition from Bullock cart driver to Rickshaw driver he was met with heavy resistance, partly due to caste prejudice. Thankfully, a kindly older mentor helped him break into the profession. Unlike many of his contemporaries, he has not turned to the scam income to make ends meet. He is incredibly kind and honest and someone in whose care we would entrust anyone.
Murugan has recently created his own food stand and has become a cherished person in his community, especially among the local students who buy his snacks and breakfasts. When he can, he gives generously in time and money, helping those around him.
Murugan works primarily as a rickshaw driver. Recently, Murugan’s rickshaw was confiscated due to several missed payments on its loan. Having already made many payments, he would lose all of the equity he’s put in. Struggling with his and his partner’s recent health emergencies was the main culprit of these missed payments. His partner had a serious case of Typhoid fever which required hospitalization and he has been in the ER several times with blood pressure issues.
The most recent problem, a serious foot infection, required him to cut back on work for more than a month. The rickshaw is still his main source of income and important in the running of the restaurant, so he finds himself in an impossible situation.
We are looking to raise $3000 to fully pay off his rickshaw ($1500) clear his debts ($400), and create some financial breathing room so that he can fully heal his feet and share some excess with some of the other people in our Tiruvannamalai family. At the barest minimum, we are looking to raise around $800 by May 18th, which will keep his rickshaw from being repossessed.
Raising this money for him would allow him not only to own his rickshaw outright, but also to pay off the remainder of his debt. After a life beset with misfortune, it would be deeply meaningful to see him have a chance to thrive. Thank you for your help in making this dream come true.
