Why we need your help

For the past few years, Munnen has been a home for small-scale, autonomous and cultural work; a room for readings, performances, events, exhibitions, publishing experiments, and quiet hours amongst books and friends.

We believe that a space for culture can be tiny, cozy, self-organized, critical, vocal, and very local - yet open to all of Stockholm and beyond.

Now, we need your help to keep Munnen going. We’re asking for 30,000 SEK to help cover our rent in 2026, so that this space for independent practices, collective reading, and the slow and unexpected can continue to exist.

What is Munnen?

Munnen is a mini cultural house and meeting place for art, books, food, listening, and collective knowledge-sharing, located at Byälvsvägen 18 in Bagarmossen, Stockholm.

Munnen is grounded in feminist, anticolonial, and queer ethics that shape everything we do, from our growing community library to our public programs.

Our small reading room hosts publications about social organizing, ecological activism, experimental art projects, and radical pedagogy. We see publishing as more than printing: it’s a way to share knowledge, nurture communities, and imagine new ways of living together.

Why this matters now

Munnen’s home is on the ground floor of a 1970s housing block that will soon face major renovation and redevelopment. The area is changing fast. Keeping Munnen open means keeping space for grassroots culture alive in the middle of urban transformation.

In a city where affordable and accessible cultural spaces are disappearing, Munnen insists that community-based culture still matters and that even a few square meters can make a difference.

What we’ve done together - some examples

The Community Library / Reading Room

Our library continues to share printed matter on social movements, art, and pedagogy available to all. In 2024, we also started an international knowledge exchange with similar reading and publishing spaces abroad, helping imagine how such spaces can strengthen reading communities and solidarities in Stockholm and beyond.

Tungan Radio

Our local radio program gathers voices around themes like love, death, imagination, and community. In autumn 2024, we hosted a Fantasiverkstad (Fantasy Workshop) for children aged 8 to 12, who wrote and recorded their own radio plays with professional artists and actors.

Open Call Exhibitions

An open call in spring 2024 brought in 31 high-quality proposals for exhibitions and workshops. Three were realized as full exhibitions, and others became shorter workshops. This open call will continue to shape our future programs.

Art for Gaza

Munnen acted as one of four hubs in Sweden for Konst för Gaza, a national art auction raising funds for the Palestine Groups in Sweden. With the help of local artists, writers, and designers, the auctions raised 62,406 SEK for humanitarian aid.

FetFilm Festival

Munnen hosted the closing day of this independent arts-film festival with animation workshops for kids, listening sessions, scriptwriting workshops, and a communal dinner and screening to end the day together.

Wet Paper is a River Towards Liberation

As part of Vaginal Davis’s exhibition HOFPFISTEREI at Index – The Swedish Contemporary Art Foundation, Munnen organized a gathering of international and local collectives working with queer-feminist and radical publishing. Together, we explored the connections between publishing and liberation.

What we wish to do next

With your help, Munnen will:

  • Continue to offer a free, welcoming space for readings, study circles, workshops, and exhibitions.

  • Expand the community library, introduce a system for loaning out books, and strengthen collaborations with local and international networks.

  • Host new radio and publishing projects that connect art and everyday life.

  • Develop children’s and youth workshops focused on creative storytelling and collective learning.

  • Offer regular monthly, reoccurring programmes such as a woodblock printing club, soup gatherings,

How your support helps

Your donation directly helps cover Munnen’s rent in 2026 (30,000 SEK) — a modest sum that means more of this tiny but vital part of our cultural ecosystem.

Munnen exists because people care about art, about language, about each other. If you’ve ever visited, listened, read, or shared a meal here, you know what this place can be.

Please support Munnen today – every donation helps, no matter how small.
