This past summer, my family and I visited Kenya. We wanted our children to experience how many Kenyans live, so we were guided through Kibera, the slums, by a local resident, Moses. Moses welcomed us warmly into his home and showed us the impactful work he’s doing for his community. Kibera is all about community—neighbors helping each other, and that’s exactly what Moses does.

Moses focuses on supporting his neighborhood and nearby areas in Kibera, where the main issues include the lack of access to running water. Imagine using a pot or pan outside your house as a toilet, a separate pot for bathing, and collecting drinking water from nearby streams that run through all of this.

Back on the tour, Moses took us to a shower and toilet unit he built for his community. It has two showers and two toilets, mostly for women, giving them a safe place to change sanitary pads (when they’re available) and shower in privacy. He was incredibly proud to provide this for his neighbors. This also means that Moses already has the staff and suppliers to get the toilets and water distribution sites and will get going immediately after receiving our donations.

In Moses’s words:

Sanitation and Shower
“We need to change from a flying toilet to a drop toilet or, ideally, a toilet with a sewer line. In Kibera, there are nearly 600 drop toilets for over 700,000 residents—that’s over 1,300 people per toilet, making for a very long wait when you’re desperate! As a result, most residents resort to ‘flying toilets,’ which means defecating into a plastic bag and throwing it out the window. This leads to very unsanitary conditions and spreads disease throughout the community.”

Water Supply
"Supply of water is unreliable and the taps are often dry, water is costly.Without access to clean water, diseases spread rapidly.
Kibera is in Nairobi Kenya, with approximately over 300,000 people.Often, families of 5 plus live in small shanties and have little or no access to clean, safe water for drinking and domestic use.Stinking latrines, open sewers and improper drainage infiltrates into water that usually finds it ‘s way into people’s homes.Locals are at risk of cholera, typhoid, dysentery etc. Many villages are experiencing problems with water.Worse case is that teenage girls would engage in sex with older men than their fathers in order to access water. They stand dangers of early childhood pregnancy;they can get HIV/AIDS;School drop out etc."

Moses is incredibly generous, even using the modest tip we gave him to buy supplies for his neighbors, keeping very little for himself.

Our goal with this fundraiser is to help Moses and his community. The funds raised will go toward building a new toilet and shower unit, with two showers and two toilets, as well as a water storage system to provide the community with safe, fresh water.

Since we’re working directly with Moses, every dollar goes directly toward supporting his community. We’re excited to assist with this project and future ones!
