Hi, my name is Morgan!

You may know me from such places as Twitter, and possibly Discord. I am not, in fact, a narwhal, but I am a stalking victim, trying very hard to balance my need for material assistance with the risks to my personal safety I undertake by using the GFM platform. I chose this picture because I just really like narwhals.

I'm a queer, trans, neurodivergent, disabled writer who has been struggling with burnout as well as multiple cascading health problems for several years now.

In addition, I've also been fighting for my Social Security disability claim for almost three years so far. I've already applied, been denied, and appealed, and due to the pandemic, my health, and bureaucracy in general, I now have to apply all over again.

During much of this time I've been lucky enough to be able to stay with a friend, one of the only people I know in the Bay Area, but, at the end of the year, that friend is moving away, because it's too expensive to stay here any longer, and I cannot move to where they are going. I have not been able to find anywhere else to live here, and I don't know anyone else here who can help me stay.

I need to move.

The bad news is that the financial stress of trying to maintain myself in the bay area is just too much. Even if I were to start receiving my Social Security checks tomorrow, even with my partner's help, it's simply too expensive to stay here any longer. Not to mention that every housing waiting list I've been able to find throughout most of the state has been closed for years.

But now, the good news! Thankfully, now that I've had my most essential surgeries, I have more freedom regarding where I can live, as that was one of the main things that kept me here this long, waiting for a surgery that had already been arranged. I know people who live just one state away, people that will be there for me if I live near them, people who can offer me community and caregiving assistance, and will be able to help my partner and I afford rent there until my Social Security checks start to come in.

I just need to be able to help get myself and my partner there, and to pay my share of the initial costs of getting into a rental apartment or house, as they can’t afford to cover the entire cost alone. (While, of course, we would prefer to buy, and a mortgage would almost certainly cost less than rent, that's a whole different situation that we would need a whole different level of help to achieve.)

That's where I need your help.

I'm going to need:
  • assistance with packing and loading my belongings
  • someone to drive the moving truck from here to there
  • assistance unloading my belongings into the new place
  • the deposit, etc., for a new place
  • a new medically appropriate bed (mine is a dangerous, physically injurious disaster that isn't worth moving if it can be avoided)

After doing some math and estimating, it seems the likely cost for all of those needs together is about $5,000. I know that's a pretty significant number, but, in the long run, moving to a new city where the cost of living is lower and I have more community nearby will make a big difference for me in terms of ongoing stress and ability to afford the continuing care that I need. I'm barely surviving here, and I need this opportunity to not just survive but maybe even thrive.

Would you please help me make this dream come true?

Every little bit helps. Please donate if you can, and share with other folks.
It would mean the world to me, thank you.
