Help my mom find a new home after 2 hurricanes took hers
Donation protected
I've created this GoFundMe for my mother, Joan Butterworth. I am her son Scott, living in New York City. My mom is 80 years old. She is the sweetest and most caring person I've ever known. For the past 28 years she has lived in a lovely and cozy house on a canal in Treasure Island / St. Petersburg, Florida.
This past September and October, her area and her house was hit with the one-two punch of Hurricanes Helene and Milton. She evacuated to nearby Largo, but her entire house was in about 3-4 feet of water and she lost nearly all of her furniture and her possessions. Some of that furniture was from her childhood home. My mom has a soft spot for sentimental things and seeing her throw out photo albums that are 40, 50, 70 years old, artwork she painted back in art school, things that belonged to her mother, etc. -- it's just devastating.
Her house is unlivable now. She's been staying at a friend's rental condo but that option is coming to an end. She's going to try to sell the house "as is" because she doesn't really have any other recourse. She didn't have flood insurance because the cost was astronomical and beyond what she could afford to spend.
She's going to need to buy a new house but at this point we don't know 1) Where (other than somewhere in the area but not in a flood zone), 2) When (although it needs to be right away) and 3) How (until if and when her house sells, she has basically nothing for a down payment).
That's where this GoFundMe comes in. I know times are hard for lots of people but I have to throw this out to the universe and hope for the best. I want my mom's 80s to be spent in a comfortable home close to friends and family in Florida. I hope that some wonderful people out there can help in whatever way possible.
