Marcia Fluer here. I reported for almost 20 years on politics in Minnesota. I moved here 50 years ago because the Twin Cities were beautiful, vibrant, and welcoming. I'm way too old to join protesters in the street but am determined to help the small businesses and family-owned restaurants in Minneapolis that are being crushed by ICE. I'm happy to say that the Ma and Pa restaurants run and staffed by immigrants and new citizens that have fed me all these years are a shining example of Minnesota's open arms. But after 3,000 ICE operatives descended on Minnesota last fall, you could practically hear the dreams crumble. Restaurant owners are locking their doors, and servers, dishwashers, cooks, and diners are caught up in the madness.
Even if the remaining 2,000 ICE agents left today, the survival of small businesses along Lake and Eat Streets in Minneapolis would be tenuous at best. I'm asking those of you across America who have offered your sympathy and shoe leather to donate what you can.
Renee Good and Alex Pretti aren't the only victims of "Metro Surge". The collateral damage is heartbreaking. Your dollars will go to the "new" needy: the families who once felt safe enough to start a business and who now face ruin through no fault of their own.
