My brother Miki has lived in Los Angeles for 25 years. His wife, Jiyeon immigrated to the United States about 18 years ago from Korea. Together, they have one son, Darby, who just completed his first semester as a freshman at Palisades High.
Like so many, they’ve lost their slice of paradise. Their home as well as Darby's school have burned down. It's still sinking in, day by day, minute by minute. After decades of hard work, Miki, Jiyeon, and Darby managed to carve out a space for themselves near the beautiful, sunny Pacific Ocean. They fell in love with the ocean air and the safe, tight-knit community right away. Jiyeon, an RN, acted as a true hero throughout the pandemic, and continues to do so during these wildfires while watching the smoke from their destroyed community in the distance. She also gained her U.S. citizenship while living in Palisades. Darby was able to walk right up the hill to his school at Palisades High. He's a straight-A honors student, and will now be switching back to online education.
A note from Miki and family:
Your support will allow them to stay afloat while they search for a new place to call home, interim housing, relocation costs and everyday essentials as they work their way back from the ashes. Our hearts goes out to anyone else affected and we are deeply grateful to all the first responders who are heroes and the kindness of this community. Really, any amount helps as we take it day by day.
