Help Melvin Porter Rebuild His Life at 75

After more than 30 years behind bars for a nonviolent crime that he was unknowingly wrapped into, Melvin Porter has been granted parole at the age of 75. He is returning home with no savings, no belongings, and serious health challenges—but with extraordinary strength, humility, and the hope of starting again. Now, he needs our support.

For the past year, I’ve had the privilege of working closely with Melvin through the Parole Preparation Project, alongside my teammate Kailey. We’ve come to know a man full of care, humor, and quiet wisdom. Getting to know Melvin has been the greatest pleasure, and we are blessed to consider him a friend.

Melvin’s life has been shaped by both hardship and transformation. He grew up in a loving home, lost family far too young, and found purpose in barbering—a craft passed down from his grandfather. In prison, he’s spent years mentoring others, maintaining sobriety, and anchoring himself in faith. He dreams of a peaceful life: reconnecting with loved ones, cooking, watching sports, and maybe—if his health allows—returning to the barber’s chair.

Like so many aging people in prison, Melvin faces steep barriers to reentry. He suffers from chronic pain, limited mobility, and glaucoma. Research shows that elderly people pose virtually no risk to public safety—yet they are often released into poverty, illness, and isolation. We’re determined to make sure that doesn’t happen to Melvin.

Every dollar raised will go toward helping him secure housing, food, medical care, and a stable foundation.
