IT’S OFFICIAL! I’m in the final stages of being approved to ADOPT through the MCFD in BC! While this has been a LONG and tedious process, I still have a couple of hurdles to overcome before it can be complete and one of them involves money.
Adoption from the foster care system has been important to me for almost seven years. I feel called to have children and want to grow my family in this way that is supporting the community where I live and enriching and lifting up the lives of children who have experienced unimaginable amounts of trauma and loss. It is a different journey but comes from the same desire to be a parent. As fellow humans we are called to care for others and we are expected to lift up those who are oppressed. I’d like to do that in this way.
In Canada we are fortunate to have benefits like maternity, paternity, and parental leave, however, because I am self-employed I do not qualify for any of these benefits. This year, the pandemic shut down my music therapy business for three months and left me to pivot to online music therapy and lessons. Currently I am back to about 60% but with at least two contracts permanently lost and uncertainty for what COVID-19 will look like in BC going forward.
All of these circumstances, as well as doing this as a solo parent, mean my only option for any length of parental leave is to save, and this year has not been optimal. That is why I am coming to you. In order to be ready to proceed with my homestudy, I need to be financially ready for at least three months of leave. The money I raise from this fundraiser will be for this purpose.
