Help Me To Build Affordable, Resilient Housing in Fiji !!

Hi, I'm Maddie, a third-year architecture student at Manchester School of Architecture. I'm not just passionate about sustainable and climate-resilient design, I'm also deeply committed to making a difference through architecture in developing countries. That's why I'm thrilled to be part of an innovative project in partnership with Naweni District School in Fiji and CAUKIN Studio. This project is not just a professional opportunity for me, it's a chance to contribute to a cause I truly believe in.

Over the course of four weeks, from August to September 2024, I will be assisting in designing and building an affordable prototype house in Naweni District. This house will provide accommodation for teachers at the school and will serve as a model for affordable housing across the South Pacific. I am seeking your support to bring this vision to life. By contributing to

this project, you will help create a sustainable and scalable housing solution for teachers and their families in the South Pacific.

Fiji, a country exposed to many natural hazards, is in urgent need of resilient housing solutions. Earthquakes, landslides, tropical storms, floods, and forest fires pose significant threats to the economic growth and lives of its communities. The lack of financial or technical resources to construct affordable and resilient housing exacerbates this situation. Our team's contributions, therefore, are not just valuable but crucial.

The design we propose is a basic module, roughly 21m2, providing shelter for a young family. Additional space will serve as a kitchen / bathroom, forming a continuous structural system. To maintain affordability and increase spatial quality, we will explore options for sliding / moveable panels. Considerations must be given to extend the core module in ways that maintain the structural system.

Each team member has a goal to raise £650. All donated funds will go directly to the project budget, allowing for its realization and success. I will be documenting the process across professional platforms. The more donations we receive, the greater the design opportunities and contributions we can make to the community! I am incredibly excited to be involved in this

project.

I believe this opportunity will not only allow me to bring long-term value to small communities but also offer me the chance to explore a new way of making a positive difference through my work as a young architectural designer! Given the unique context of the location, I anticipate

encountering both challenges and opportunities in designing and constructing with local resources, taking into account the island's specific climatic conditions. I am excited to continue exploring the outcomes of this project as I advance in my architectural career. Direct involvement in the project's planning, on-site design, and construction will provide me with invaluable experience and knowledge.
