Support Sea Change & Save Lives!

SEA CHANGE is a NEW non-profit Recovery Community Organization (RCO) based in Southern Ocean County, NJ, serving statewide and beyond.

At the ground level we are seeking $10,200 to get up and running so that our central hub can start saving lives. Link to the budget here .

As a practicing Certified Peer Recovery Specialist with 28 years of personal recovery, I am witnessing our community members suffering, dying and grieving losses of loved ones.  As if things weren’t bad enough, substance use disorders and overdose deaths have risen during the coronavirus pandemic: In NJ, overdose deaths have increased 17% over last year by July. Our state is sadly on track to end 2020 with a record number of fatalities related to alcohol, opioids and other drugs. This year, nearly 1,600 residents lost their lives to overdose between January and the end of June.

Tragically. Southern Ocean County has virtually no direct services! These conditions are unacceptable, preventable and treatable.

Sea Change will provide a fresh approach taking on this epidemic through online and in-person modes of connection to create, build and establish life-saving help for those with substance use disorders and their devastated loved ones. Sea Change combines evidence-based practices with fun healthy lifestyle approaches to recovery, encompassing ALL pathways.

With our "sister" organization, New Jersey Organizing Project (, we will use our living proof data of what works to set policy and press our legislatures for reform.

Through our connections online and in-person we will build power and crush stigma!

SEA CHANGE’S long-term mission is to create a new non-profit business model that informs and unites recovery services and community organizing. This model will serve as a template for other underserved and/or disenfranchised communities nationwide.

Our online website will act as our central hub. We will host community Zoom meetings and grow into a full menu of virtual support services led by those in long-term recovery (by both recovering individuals and family members). Each service will bring much needed support to our underserved and disenfranchised communities in SOC - and beyond.

Website services will include but not be limited to:
All Recovery, Recovery Dharma, WRAP groups, SMART Recovery, CRAFT groups, MAT Support, Harm Reduction Support, Nutrition in Recovery, Physical Activity in Recovery (i.e. Yoga, Surfing, Walking, CrossFit, etc.), Creativity in Recovery, and so on. Many of these offerings will be through mutual partnerships with vetted organizations.

Each month we will host a virtual live event with a special guest speaker, including a live Q and A period at the end. Guest speakers will include long-term persons in recovery who will share hope and living proof of what's possible.

Online we will also provide 1:1 non-clinical credentialed Peer Recovery Support Services to both families and individuals. We will also offer referrals to: proven networks of clinical care, medically assisted treatmentNaloxone/Narcan kits, harm reduction services, and more.

Throughout the process we will provide NJRP/NJOP important data to show how our communities benefit from our services and to take that data to our elected officials and fight for policy change and support.

The primary purpose of going offline is to get community members together and:
- have FUN
- crush STIGMA

Through our fresh air activities and community involvement, we will de-stigmatize what it means to be "in recovery". During this pandemic, it is especially important to get outside, to get active and to get together safely. This is true for anyone, but perhaps even more so for those seeking recovery.

We will focus on utilizing our unique natural environment and resources to enjoy recovery through healthy lifestyle activities including but not limited to: surfing, walking, hiking, stand-up paddle boarding, birdwatching, clamming, seining, fishing, yoga, lighthouse climbing, dancing, concerts, campfires, etc.

Events will vary based on seasons, our local environment and various shore interests.

Long-term recovery is real for over 20 million Americans and many of those people are happy to be of service to those who are looking for stabilization, support and a new way of life. We can and will show the way and have fun while doing it. Lives will be saved and families and friends will heal and thrive.
