Did you know... In Malyan Orangutan means 'Person of the forest'? Deforestation in the Jungles, where they live has reduced their habitat, and illegal hunting has put populations at serious risk. There all 3 of the orangutan species are on the WWF critically endangered list due to, problems such as habitat loss, illegal poaching, the black market pet trade. There are only an estimated 104,700 (Bornean), 13,846 (Sumatran), 800 (Tapanuli) Orangutan left in the wild. I want to help change that! I'm Lucy and I have taken on the task of using my holidays to volunteer for a charity called "The Great Projects" In August 2019 I will be arriving in Sandakan, Malaysia for 2 weeks of cultural teaching, reforestation and conservation work with Orangutans and Pygmy Elephants. I will be staying in a small village in the rainforest with a population of about 1000 people. There is a primary school in the village, where I will spend time teaching locals the importance of the work being done by charities throughout their country to protect the jungles and their inhabitants. I will also spend time tracking orangutans and pgymy elephants for research into living patterns, wellness, family sizes and so on. To be able to help these endangered sepicies, I am looking to raise money to help fund my trip. £1300 is the cost of being part of the project, including, food, transport, activities, supplies and accommodation. The rest will be used towards my flights, and any equipment, clothing, and necessities for the trip. If I am lucky enough to raise more than I need I will donate it to charities working in conservation of animals living in these drastically declining rainforests.
